I am confused about what happens when I use "Get Location"/Source =
Any

I know that Tasker will try to update location using GPS and if it
succeeds then %LOC gets updated.

If it does not get a GPS fix, does it then try to locate using Cell
info and Wifi info (i.e. if it can see a phone signal or a wifi, it
tries to do a look-up of where they are)? If this is successful, is
it %LOC or %LOCN or both that get updated?

What I am trying to do is get my location recorded hourly, preferably
by GPS but if that doesn't work then (less accurately) by cell or wifi
info.

It tries both at the same time.

No, that's part of 'Net'.

Use Any. Record %TIMES before the Get Location. Look at %LOCTMS, if
it's greater than
what you recorded at the start of the task, then you got a GPS fix.
Otherwise, repeat with %LOCNTMS.

Thanks. Yup, I can do it that way. I found it a bit confusing that
the net location is explicitly indicated by the N in LOCN, whereas
there use of just LOC for the other method suggegsted to me that it
was general, i.e. gave the result from any method. Calling it LOCG
for example (LOCation by Gps) would make it clearer that you ALSO have
to check LOCN separately if LOC is not updated.

Anyway, Tasker is just fantastic and I am gradually using it to
replace more and more of my other apps. Great work.

Yes, historically they used to be combined, but many people requested
them to be separately accessible so there was a somewhat clumsy
migration.

Have you tried an application Called 'Remind my path' . It does a
great job At recording locations But the best part of the application
Is the nice map viewer It has that allows you to Sequentially View all
of your recordings On a map.

Also possible with Tasker :-)

One day I have to stop developing and start writing profiles!

Sorry Pent.... did not mean slight tasker in any way.
I am relatively new to tasker but since installing it I have not been
able to stop making cool new profiles with it. (the wife is starting
to get annoyed ......) It truly is the most used and useful app on
my phone..

Maybe after some more practice with tasker I will attempt a location
app. The one I mentioned does have 2 slightly annoying bugs and as
always a few things I would do different....

Keep up the great work...... Rich

No offence taken at all, was just mentioning that it was also
basically possible with Tasker.
I fully acknowledge that apps dedicated to a particular purpose will
likely be better at it than Tasker.

Perhaps a more detailed explanation of what you are trying to do.  Usually 'gps tracking' implies tracking your own device and logging it.  What do you mean by

If you do have a profile/ task started please post the exported "description" as well.

To post your profile or task here...  Long press on the profile or task name / ( 3 dot menu with 4.0+ ) export / export "DESCRIPTION" to clipboard (not XML)

Any linked tasks will be exported with the profile they are linked to..

To be able to export, The beginner mode needs to be off and the profile needs to be named by you (Not the Tasker listed name.  Tasker will list your profile with the context name if you have not given it one).

You dug out quite an old unrelated discussion. Create new one with more details instead.
