Personally, I do not like to enable the Audio Channel to my Bluetooth devices (see screenshot). I think this is what makes the Bluetooth Connection fail to connect to the device, when I enable the Audio, it connect without a problem.
However, Secure Settings is able to connect to the device even when the Audio Channel is disabled, hence, I think there is a way to do it. If you need more details, please let me know.

Do you get an error at all when you try to connect and it doesn't work?

When I connect to the audio channel only, I get no error.
When I connect to the call channel only, I get timeout error.

Any news about this? Just found this thread because I have the same problem. In my case, I'm connecting a phone to another phone by bluetooth, for BT tethering. Usually I do this with Bluetooth Auto Connect, but I need to get rid of that app, so I thought I could use the new Bluetooth Connection action. However, just like Abdullah, I only get a Timeout Error. Obviously, it's a non-audio connection. When I switch to Android's Bluetooth Settings, there's nothing happening while the Tasker action is running.

Hi, just to be clear, so the test you're trying is to connect 2 Android phones via bluetooth?

Yes, phone 1 ist Bluetooth tethering host to phone 2. On phone 2, I try to connect to phone 1 with the Tasker Bluetooth Connection action.
It works with Secure Settings, but I need to be able to provide the name of the other phone by variable, and in Secure Settings I can only choose known devices.
It also works with Bluetooth Auto Connect, but I need to be able to turn on/off that behaviour automatically, and BAC can't do that via the Tasker plugin, always have to open the app.

Unfortunately I'm not really sure how Secure Settings or BAC is doing it... I'm trying to connect to it the best I can but it doesn't seem to work... You don't happen to know if any of those apps is open source do you? :P

No idea, sorry. Can only say that they don't seem to be updated anymore, which is all the more reason I was hoping for a solution in Tasker.
For now I can work around it with Secure Settings (BAC for some reason takes much more time to connect and I can't choose which device to connect to within the Tasker action).
Only got their website: http://securesettings.intangibleobject.com and http://www.uniqtec.eu/applications/bluetooth-auto-connect.html, perhaps they react on contact?

Bluetooth Auto Connect absolutely does let you select the device in the Tasker plugin configuration. And it was recently updated, a few months ago. As for performance, try going to advanced settings (in the app, not the plugin) and enabling the notification icon. Also make sure it is excluded from any power management, just like you would for Tasker and any other plugins.
I've been using BAC for a long time. I stopped for a while due to those same performance issues you are mentioning, but I started using it again and I haven't had those issues. At least not as bad as they were before. Still not super fast, but at least it is reliable, now.

I know decided to use Secure Settings. Connection is super fast and reliable. I can't connect by variable, but I solved that with Tasks that have a condition. Not generic, but I can copy the task whenever I need to add another BT device.
Would still like to do it without external tool, but as Joao doesn't know what could be wrong, I don't want to push him.

Offff. I hit this as well. I really would like this to just work in Tasker. I have a shitty car bluetooth system whose Audio quality over Bluetooth is really bad so I keep the Audio profile off, and use a aux cable instead for music. It also has an annoying issue where it sometimes fails to autoconnect to my phone so I wanted to use Tasker to force a connection to it, to make my life easier
