Hi,

I'd like to have an icon shown hover (on top) of Google Navigator.
Specifically, I'd like to have shown a button which, when pressed,
launches an app (Vlingo).

I think Tasker Widget is for... home widgets, right ?

Is there a way to make this happen ?
I know Tasker can show a menu when inserting headphones, may we start
from there maybe ?

Create a new scene called Hover with an Image element. In the Image
Element
Tap tab, add a App / Load App action.

Now create a profile:

Context: App (Navigator)
Enter Task: Show Scene: Hover (As Overlay)
Exit Task: Destroy Scene: Hover

It took me some time before I realized I was 3 releases behind :p
Thank you !
I'm on the good direction.

Aesthetically, my overlay has no alpha (I'm using the app Recorder
icon). In Tasker UI preview it shows with "transparent" background,
while live on usage it looks like the icon with a black square
background.

Do overlays support PNG trasparencies ?

Is the scene background colour (Menu / Background Colour in the scene
editor) set to 0 alpha ?
You're sure you havn't set a background for the image element ?

All my tests with PNGs had no problems.

My bad.
I tought I disabled that Alpha. Instead I disabled the icon's
background alpha.

PNG transparency works, I confirm.

Unfortunately, the resulting icon seems not sensible to tap.
"Tap tab, add a App / Load App action" is in place.
When I push the hover, the underlying app elements are touched
instead

You need to show it as 'blocking overlay' if you want to interact with
the elements
in the scene. Sorry, I had that wrong in my first post.

What are some other practical uses for this feature? What did you
envision for us to do with this?

The practical uses are limited only by your imagination. ;-)

I have an overlay that comes up over part of the lock screen, so that I can see various bits of information without unlocking the display.
Another scene pops up when I receive a text message, which saves me opening the messaging app to read it.
I have another one that is launched by a long-press on search. This contains a button which first dismisses the scene, then takes a screen-shot.
(This one allows me to take a screen-shot whenever I need to, without having to plan it in advance.)
Another scene shows a local map based on my current position. I can place markers on the map and I'm working on a way to calculate distances between them.
(This is much quicker than opening the Maps application)
I even have a scene which is a simple calculator. (This is not much quicker than the calculator application, and is much less accurate, but was fun to build)

I found a very practical use! My wife and I use BabyESP app to track
our sons feeding, diapers and sleep. I have overlayed a flashlight
app in the lower right corner so we can launch a flashlight without
leaving BabyESP.

Good one.

I imagined stuff like overlaying volume control in the standard music
app
because it doesn't have one on the playing-track screen.

Putting an invisible 'hot spot' in the corner you can stroke over to
show
an apps menu.

Stroking along the bottom of the window to go to previous app (when
%LAPP
works :-)) etc.

Do you track Nathan's time peeing, or are you trying to regularise and
plan his urinary timetable!?!?

Excellent implementation though :)

My use of this is to me more in control while in the car.

I use Vlingo as my "home" when docked in car.
Once I fire up Navigator (via Vlingo), I lose the option to go back to
Vlingo and issue other commands (like a phone call). Then I have to
long-press home button, or even worse, switch back via notifications
bar drop menu.

With this, I simply have an overlay while I'm in Navigator AND car
docked, pressing the hover brings me back to Vlingo, with a single,
less risky tap.

How are you determining that the lock screen is displayed?  I'd like to add some music controls to the lock screen but haven't figured out how to know when the scene should be shown.
