I am just getting started with tasker and want to understand.

my first goal in getting tasker is:

at night time only, I want my gmail notification sound to be silent
and vibrate off.
I still want to receive notifications.

and I want to leave my phone on the home screen - not have the gmail
app in the foreground.

and during the day, return the notification sound to my set sound and
vibrate on.

is this possible with tasker?

thanks.

Android lumps all the notification volumes into one variable. However,
there was a thread a few weeks ago that essentially can use the Tasker
copy file action to change an mp3 to a silent file.

The example uses gmail so you should be able to follow it and if you
have any problems feel free to bump up the thread for some help!

Good luck!

I'm new also but I think I have this part down. Create new profile by pressing "new". Then give it a name if you want such as "Gmail notify off/on". Press OK. Then press option with clock icon. Then set time frame for notify off. Press OK. Then press (+) at bottom left. Press audio and then set notification volume down and vibrate off. Now back in home screen, press your new profile and select "exit task". From there you can tell it to reset to desired volume and vibration when your set time frame has ended. Hope this helps.

I would recommend that you set gmail to display notifications, but
turn off sound and vibrate. Then create a profile with the appropriate
time context (that is, during the day), and a Notification event (it's
under UI), with the owner app of gmail, and let that vibrate and play
the appropriate sound.
