I want to be able to start recording the tracks of my exercise run without using the keys on the phone, and I want my phone to be locked while I am outside running.  Then I want to stop the tracks recording at the end of my run without having to use the keyboard.

I have been able to achieve the first:

1  Detect NFC tag
2  Start recording the track (using My tracks plugin)
3  Keyguard Off
4  Lock screen.

At this point my phone is locked by Tasker, and if my phone is stolen, anyone who reboots will get my SIM card password screen.

But if on my return home I put the phone next to another NFC tag, Tasker can't read the tag because of the locked screen.

Is there any way to get Tasker to respond to events (eg a nearby NFC tag) while the screen is locked by Tasker, and to disable the locked screen under program control?  Alternatively, is there any other way to protect my phone while I am out running and still enable Tasker to respond to events?

I realise that this might be easier if I root my phone, but I prefer not to do that.

No I don't think it would even be possible if you root your phone. That is part of the android OS, If the screen is off it won't detect NFC tags.

However if you turn on the screen and get to the password prompt, then scan the NFC tag does it work at that point? Might try that. That would be the only way i would see that it would work.

I have nfc scanning working on the lock screen of my rooted S3. Had to flash a zip from the xda forum. You can have it scanning when the screen is off or on lock screen depending on the zip you flash. The zips are specific to the version number of your os.

I can find the forum link when I am near my home pc if required.

Another way which would most likely get to complex and drain the batt faster would be to leave the screen on and use a plug in called 'screen filter' this will dim the screen to almost black and i am told will use very little power for the screen. Of course your phone will not sleep either.  Then you would have to implement your own security perhaps with a blocking scene of sorts...  complex / drains more power but it is a option..  :)
