Now that Robert Ryan & I seem to have got the on-unlock wallpaper change working ok, is there a way to smooth/fade out the transition?

Previously I used to use Wallpaper Changer app, but due to abandonment by the dev and a lack of features I needed, I switched to the Tasker version.

One thing that the app did that was nice was a smooth fade transition when it changed wallpapers, it wasn't anything more than a fade in of the new wallpaper and only lasted half a second or so, just long enough to make the change nice and smooth, the Tasker one on the other hand just abruptly  changes. Is there anything in Tasker that would allow a fade of picture or similar?

Clearly Android itself has the ability, not sure about Tasker.

A fade can only be achieved via a live wallpaper if I'm not mistaken...

That's correct, you gotta do  a plugin to let us do simple transitions. I have a 4 line task that does all that I could want - except make the actual change abrupt, surely you could magic up  some auto-something for that last little bit :)

A live wallpaper is a very big task to go into :) Can you add that request here so I can give it proper priority? https://tasker.helprace.com/s1-general/ideas Thanks!

I don't know how soon this may ever get added but you should really check out Kustom's KLWP app of you don't know about it. It and Tasker combined take care of pretty much everything on my phone. Animations and live wallpapers are about the least it can do. You can also send data from Tasker to be used in KLWP wallpapers. Just a suggestion.

This is true, I know there are various apps with a degree of tasker compatibility, thing is, my 4 line wallpaper changer does everything I could want, even changing folders on time of day - bar smoothly fade out the old wallpaper to  the new.

I'd rather not have to have a complete live wallpaper system just for that, plus if I did, then why use Tasker at all, I could just go back to Wallpaper Changer or similar.
