How to get Tasker to recognize I'm in car on Android Auto

There's a bit of an oddity when using an Android auto head unit. Firstly Tasker does not detect that the Android auto app is running on my phone so I can't use that method to tell Tasker I'm in the car. Secondly because the head unit is connected via USB, the Bluetooth method of detecting the car also does not work. Even when the car does connect my Bluetooth it uses a strange method whereby even Smart Lock settings for that Bluetooth device are not saved. End result I cannot find a way for Tasker to recognize I am in the car, even though there are many apparent signals that I am. Can anyone recommend a reliable way for this to happen? I have tried using Bluetooth Near but it still thinks I'm near 5 minutes after I have left the car and I need it to perform some actions before I get to my front door. I don't want to reduce the milliseconds used to check Bluetooth Near because it increases battery usage and drain. Thank you.

Get an NFC tag and associate that as a context for a profile.  Swipe when you get in the car, or put it where ever you put the phone down to connect to USB.

That's a good idea, but I also need the phone to know the moment I stop the engine, and don't really want to have to think about tapping a 2nd NFC tag somewhere every time I exit the car.

With so much happening (USB connection, Android Auto running, Bluetooth connecting in a weird way...) surely there's something that Tasker can pick up in a failsafe manner...

What starts Android Auto?  Maybe you can use the same trigger.  Have you tried %WIN?  Make sure you have Tasker listed as an Accessability app and create a profile with the context %WIN is set.  The entry task can flash the value so you know what to trigger on.

That's actually fairly simple as well.  The same NFC profile/task can set a variable like 'AndroidAuto' to 1.  Then, create a second profile with contexts of 'No Power' and 'AndroidAuto' = 1.  Then, when power is turned off, this profile will fire, and whatever task you have set for it.  This second profile/task can also reset the 'AndroidAuto' variable to 0 so that it's ready to have the NFC tag fire the next time you're in the car.

Another option is the power any context and the blue tooth near in the same profile.

If the 'Android auto' puts up a notification there is a rooted method to check what notifications are currently in the status bar.

There are these older methods to detect if a app is running.
