All has been fine with tasker previously, but the himedia q10 pro doesn't show the settings (3 vertical dots).
Box is running Android 7.
Have tried the menu button remote, have tried various soft keys for menu button, have tried getting tasker to simulate the menu button press...
But nothing brings up the settings bar. I need this to turn beginner mode off and import my code from the old box.
Any ideas? I have not noticed any problems in other apps.
see the last comment of this thread for my workaround to this and a few more things your gunna run into.

FWIW the devs messing with Material Design so hopefully when he releases that update we won't have this problem with the menu button anymore.

Aye but my workaround should definitely work for you because it doesn't use the menu button or have anything to do with it, it simply opens the preference screen of Tasker bypassing the menu button completely.
Oh ok thanks. I'm not running Android TV, just android 7 so expected full compatibility but it appears to be the same problem as you. I have created a task with a wait command, simulate the menu button press in the "input" options and run it manually. Then quit out to the home screen of tasker but it doesn't work..

its the load app action pick Tasker as the app to load but long press it and then pick the settings screen from the list.
Thanks. I read that comment but I assumed creating a task to open the settings was what I did. I can't find the function to open tasker settings/preferences directly in the actions for a task. Maybe I'm overlooking it.

The hardware company for my biz says tasker ia not compatible with television hardware feature. It's an android box but maybe this is something to do with Android 7
That will only work for certain apps so you will probably need the plugin still. Taskers not supported on Android TV/Devices usually it has to be sideloaded there's been quite a few threads asking how to get past the disclaimer because of the missing action bar items.
Oh wow. Hadn't realised that was a function... Now to see where I could cut out the use of autoinput that is great but not always an ideal way to navigate to certain things in apps..

According to the developer, it's to do with tasker not the box, and has given some changes to an xml file that should show the settings to then return the text back to normal after changes. Which makes sense seeing all other android apps work fine.
I dunno then but that workaround should get you out of beginner mode.
Thing is my box is android nougat, not android TV. That's why I bought it because I wanted compatibility with all my android apps. It has the usual play store so all other apps install fine and function as before.

Thanks for your help. Will return back and leave my solution..
Hopefully.
my method doesn't work? thats surprising it works for me perfectly and Android TV is really dumbed down. The OS on your box will be untouched so it should work.
try this instead use a send Intent action and in the first field put this net.dinglisch.android.tasker.ACTION_OPEN_PREFS and change the target to Activity.
