I use an app called Force Control Free that uses proximity sensor to control media player (short stroke Next track, long stroke Previous track etc)
Would this be possible using Tasker?

Probably, something like:

Proximity:
Enter Task:
Variable Set, %StartTime, %TIMES
Exit Task:
Variable Set, %Duration, %TIMES - %StartTime (Do Maths checked)
If %Duration > 1
Alert / Flash, Long stroke!
Else
Alert / Flash, Short stroke!

The lack of millisecond resolution might turn out to be a problem.

Have a basic version working already, enough at least to get rid of yet another app :) Tasker rocks!

Hey Pent, is it possible to get millisecond resolution in the future?  I currently achieve these tasks using the %PACTIVE and Wait commands with the proximity sensor.  The length of the Wait command decides the difference between a short swipe and a long swipe.  I currently have that Wait command set to 200ms and things seem to work alright.  I was just curious about the resolution limits of doing this since you mentioned it.  Could you expand on what you said?

Sure.

That's a good idea.

Not sure what you're asking. Currently you can't get the time down to
milliseconds, only seconds.

Stupifier, would you be willing to share your setup?

I discuss it in detail in the "What have YOU done with Tasker?" Thread.

Glad, I could help.  I only wish I did not have to hold my hand over the proximity sensor for SO long to achieve a long swipe action.  Maybe Pent will improve the resolution in the future.

I must say that my setup is pretty satisfying, offcourse it is not a quick handswipe but it doesn't feel annoying either, you have to get a feel of the timing but once that's done it works great.
(btw I just use it as Next, Previous track media control for use in car)

Using the proximity sensor for a single action is just fine....Its pretty much an easy hand swipe for that.  The issue is when you want to use the proximity sensor for TWO different things.  I have it setup to go Next Track with a quick, single swipe.  Then I ALSO have it setup to basically turn phone Screen On when I hold my hand over the sensor.  As it stands now, I usually have to hold my hand over the sensor for about 3 seconds (AT MINIMUM) for that action to trigger.  Ideally, I'd like Tasker to detect the difference quicker.  It is all in the response time (resolution?) of the proximity sensor and what Tasker allows there.  I'm sure Pent has it set to a particular value for battery conservation reasons.....but it would be nice if there were a setting.

In my case I use it to control Next en Previous track in car. Next track short swipe and Previous long swype, hold two fingers over on the sensor (for about a second i guess).
I'd rather leave the screen off while driving still being able to control track playing :)
