Closing Apps Automatically

My phone (mytouch 3g slide) has a few apps it auto starts in the
background. I can't uninstall them either.

Some are things like Voice Dialer (I'll never use), mp3 store, etc.

I tried adding Application contexts that automatically kills those
apps upon startup. It works fine when I start the app myself, but the
apps still run in the background when the OS auto starts them.

Is there a way to kill those with Tasker automatically? When I hit the
Advanced Task Killer widget, it kills them ok, but I would like them
to not even start at all.

Thanks,

Peter

I have on the todo list to detect background apps running but it will
be a while.

You could try a repeating time context, say every 15 minutes.

Can't stop them starting I think, sorry.

My issue is that I have a task that starts up applications, turns on
BT and GPS when I plug in the headset. Everything works fine when I
plug it in. However when I disconnect I have it turn everything off
and close the applications. However recently, I think android 2.2, BT
closes, GPS turns off but non of the applications close

Did you put a "Kill App" in the exit task?

Settings will be restored when a profile exits, but unless you put a
Kill App in the exit task, it won't automatically kill an app that it
started.

Yes. I Have been using this for many months and since I put 2.2 it
does not kill applications anymore. It will close everything else but
will not kill the application even if I put KILL "Applications" in the
exit

Unfortunately that's a 'feature' of 2.2, if I understood correctly.

A feature? Why would that be a feature? So I take it after everyone
moves to 2.2 that the kill feature will no longer work?

I'm having the same problem with this new "feature". After upgrading
my HTC Desire to 2.2 the App Kill function in Tasker no longer closes
the app.

It's a froyo "feature", read: security restriction.

Are there other apps that can handle this reliably? I noticed my "task
monitoring" apps aren't killing apps when I forcefully kill them now
either.

This is a huge bummer. :(

Is there any update or fix for in Tasker currently?

Google decided that Task Killers were causing so many problems that it
should
be stopped e.g. people kill application, it's alarm doesn't go off,
they don't understand
why, they complain.

Guess we need a FAQ entry for this.

It's not possible that it works like it used to before Froyo.

It's *is* possible with a rooted phone but the task-kill app has to be
rewritten a bit.

It's not possible with Tasker on a rooted phone, that's on the todo
list.

If it is possible on a rooted phone, does anyone have a S4L or shell
command that will kill an app?

I have noticed that # killall -9 com.pandora.android doesnt work
either (Just causes pandora to restart)

Be aware that Android will restart any apps that you've killed so
you'll be incurring extra overhead when they're automatically
restarted. I used to be an automated task killer kinda guy. Now that
I'm on 2.2, the only time I kill an app is when it's really
misbehaving and chewing up battery and I can't uninstall it. So far I
haven't found any apps that continue to misbehave once they've been
killed (and automatically restarted).

Yeah, I noticed the restart.

I just want to stop Pandora from playing music with Tasker. I used to
do this by "kill app" which does not appear to work reliably now in
2.2. Is there another method to do this?

You could ask yourself why do not want to kill the app?

Instead execute a go home which will mark the task as background and
the OS will kill the task as when needed...

Google has posted more than a few times now task kills in 2.1/2.2 are
not a good idea..

Hmmm I wonder also if something like this would not work..

pm disable com.android.music/
com.android.music.MediaButtonIntentReceiver

This is for the stock music player but you get the idea...

Pandora doesnt listen to the stock media Intents. I believe it was
noted elsewhere that we could fake out the headset controls to get it
to pause and Pent indicated that it would be in the next release (love
to test that!). I dont want to hijack this thread completely though
so Ill let that alone.

I am aware of what android does and how it manages tasks and memory.
Aside from that I want to kill apps that are:
- Definitely not needed for certain periods of time that poll over the
data connection when put in the background (save battery)
- Interacting with the device when left running in the background
(Play Sound, Turn On Lights, Vibrate, etc) (annoying)

Ozgreg that works and isnt as harsh as killing it. Thank you!!!

# pm disable com.pandora.android

The app completely doesnt respond anymore in the UI ( not ideal ) but
I can deal with that until Pent releases a new version for the MEDIA
BUTTON controls.

Music starts back up again when
# pm enable com.pandora.android

Here is my sl4a script for those interested in stopping a running
program (You need a rooted phone with SuperUser installed). Change
the command below to 'enable' to re-enable it. ;)

#!/system/bin/sh
if [ "$(id -u)" == "uid=0(root) gid=0(root)" ]; then
echo -e "\n\n"
echo -e "Kill the app"
pm disable com.pandora.android
exit 0
else
echo -e "Getting root priveleges\n"
