Along the lines of the "what have you done with Tasker" thread, I was wondering what interesting things people have done with Tasker & AutoRemote ? I recently installed it to simply send some variables from phone to tablet, and was very impressed with it, once I worked out the configuration :) Always nice to hear ideas and suggestions, so welcome any replies!

My favorite use has been in combination with AutoHotkey to send the contents of my PC clipboard to my phone clipboard with a simple keystroke. That lets me compose longer text blocks, shell commands, api keys, etc. on a physical keyboard much quicker and easier than I can swype on the phone. I also use a regex match on the phone to see if the received text is a URL and asks if I want to navigate there.

I also use a "ping" profile that makes the phone beep once when it receives a command from the PC. Helps if I forget where I left it.

I have a python script running as a service in my home PC which monitors my garage doors. Anytime they change (open/closed) it sends a status update via AutoRemote. I have Tasker keep a persistent notification up which let's me see at a glance if a door is open. I can also send a ssh command to run the status script, or to open or close the door, directly from Tasker.

I'm planing to expand it to ping the local network to see who left or came home. (We use static ip's on our phones to combat an issue with our router.)

I recently started using auto remote aswell in combination with tasker ofcourse. So far i have made a widget on my tablet that shows the battery level of my phone and did the same on my phone displaying my tablet battery. Next thing i wanna do is get my laptop battery level in a widget too. Also im gonna set it up so i can use teamviewer functions on my tablet and pc.

I'm most interested in how you are sending SSH commands via tasker, been pulling my hair out trying to do that.

Hi,

I'm running the lite version of AutoRemote in association with my Micasaverde Vera3 home automation controller.
I'm using only the message (which can have only two characters) to send me notifications about the event in my home automation system. With only two chars, we can have 255 differents messages (from 00 to FF), it's enough for the moment ;)

Ssh took quite a bit of flailing to get it to work. First, it helps to put you commands in a script, then run it in a terminal emulator to troubleshoot it. You get error feedback there you don't get in tasker. Once it's working nicely, past it into a tasker RunShell.

Here us one of my commands, edited of course:

ssh -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no "MyUse...@MyServerName.com" -i /data/PathToMyKeyFile "m:Python\Python m:\Python\FetchGarageStatus.py"

First, is just the ssh to run the socket.

The next two parts turned out to be critical. When you use a regular ssh app, you confirm a server is the one you meant to contact and put it in a known list. I completely failed to find a way to do this via command line, so those two pieces make ssh ignore the server check. This opens you to accidently talking to the wrong server and decreases security, so use at your own risk.

Next part is my login. It is the username for the destination computer and where to find it. My router has a dyndns address, otherwise, you'll need to watch your routers external IP and update your script. You'll need to pass the ssh ports through your router, and the firewall at the destination.

After the -i is the location of the key file. I keep mine buried in the data directory so that a factory reset has to wipe it. I also have a profile that wipes the file if a wrong pass code is entered twice. I keep a backup of it elsewhere for restoring. I know I generated the key pair via command line on the android, but I don't recall exactly how. It would have been a simple ssh -something, though. Your key file will need to have its permissions restricted to owner only, as I recall. Running in the terminal will help fine tube everything.

Finally, the command to run. If you cab do it at dos-prompt, you can put it here. This one just runs a Python script that checks the doors and triggers an autoremote.

For reference, my computer is Windows 7, and my android is running CyanogenMod 10.1 (android 4.2.2). I can't tell how much of this would be different on a Linux or Mac. I don't even know if ssh is available for command line in other android ROMs.

Also, when I opened up my ports to ssh, I started to get quite a lot of attempts to access my machine. They were pretty clumsy, but I set my firewall to only accept connections from IP ranges I'd seen my phone get.

Jenny, have you tried to use ssh via AutoRemote? The linux walkthrough is in reality an SSH walkthrough :)

No, I haven't. I'll need a bit to digest that Linux command into something I can use. Can it use key pairs? If not, where is the authentication stored? (As in /sdcard or /data) Are they encrypted?

I use it to receive a notification on my phone when my home PC is switched on.

From that notification I can enable or disable a live video stream from the PCs webcam, which I can access from the phone to see who's using it. I can also click a button on the notification to send a message to display on the PC.

All this happens completely invisibly on the PC. The only indication is the LED on the webcam when it is active.

It's very "Die Hard 4.0". :)

What app are you using on the PC for the live video stream?  I want to use that with my workstation setup at home so that it's not being... mistreated ;) .

Really?!

This sounds super cool.  Care to share how you achieved this please?

Thanks in advance
