I want to create a variable image in a scene that recalls %variablename.png instead of a set image. In the research I've done it is possible by pressing the arrows next to the image thumb but for some reason I don't have this option in my tasker. I'm running the latest version (4.1u3) and I'm not running beginner mode. Any help appreciated!

Disable Menu / Prefs / UI / Beginner Mode

You can also use a variable with the Element Image action BTW.

I believe the problem is that you need to load the image using the Tasker's action Load Image and then show the image using the Scene Image Element selecting Image Buffer as the Image source. Haven't actually ever used it, but I think that's how it works.

created a task that went through the precautions, determined what the image would be, set the variable and added the task loading the image to file:/sdcard/downloads/exampleimage.png. Tried recalling said image through Scene image element after selecting image buffer as the source but still did not load anything.

I went ahead and built a simple task that I have tested and works. Hope it helps. If not please post a description of your profile.

    Test Show Pix (114)
    A1: Variable Set [ Name:%MYpix To:file:///storage/sdcard0/DCIM/PerfectlyClear/Jordana-Brewster.jpg Do Maths:Off Append:Off ]
    A2: Load Image [ Source:%MYpix ]
    A3: Create Scene [ Name:Trew ]
    A4: Show Scene [ Name:Trew Display As:Overlay Horizontal Position:100 Vertical Position:100 Show Exit Button:Off Continue Task Immediately:On ]
    A5: Wait [ MS:0 Seconds:5 Minutes:0 Hours:0 Days:0 ]
    A6: Destroy Scene [ Name:Trew ]

Sorry, I was getting mixed up with colour parameters. I think you ATM need to use the Element Image action.
e.g. with a profile:

event Variable Set, %Image
Element Image... %Image

Will have a look at why that variable specification isn't possible in the element itself...
