Tasker can use whatever TTS engines you have installed on the phone. You just need to download them several are available.

Now be aware that becuase of the nature of TTS engines the files required are HUGE. so be prepared to devote a good chunk of your phones memory to the task if you don't want to use the default Google TTS engine.

It does take a MASSIVE chunk of memory. But, I use aCapela's little creature, adjusted the speed and pitch using variables, and of course altered sentence structure significantly...

But talk like Yoda, my little Siri style profile does.

It is hilarious being in maps and hearing Yoda say, "keep left at the fooork". I've got all sorts of random sayings programmed. Like, "I sense a disturbance in the force. Hmmm. Yess." Whenever a package is updated while at home between certain times. Even random hello and goodbye when appropriate.

Here is an example of the file I read into a variable and split for random goodbyes... I think there are some GOOD ones :-)

That sounds cool, I have SVOX and Ivona, I love Ivona but it doesn't work properly and there doesn't seem to be any support i emailed them months ago, How's Acapella you had any unsupported locale problems?

None. I can even still use tasker to dictate which speech engine to use.

I have little creature set to default though.

I had Ivona also, with mixed results.

That and all my vocal interactions programmed into my device are very commanding (very firm and definitive) and it doesn't feel or sound right with a feminine voice.

So Tasker and Acapela are playing nicely for you? Ever since my Nexus 4 updated to Android 4.3, Acapela doesn't seem to respond reliably to Tasker and I've yet to figure out why.

It's so maddening because Acapela's voices are so superior to SVOX, but SVOX has independent volume control, a pronunciation editor, and responds to Tasker's SAY command every time.

I'd just really like to learn why it's not working. :F

I did find that I had to adjust the channel stream for an update at one point to be heard through the device and my Bluetooth.

But then I had some OS update that increased the viable stream channels for that action from one to three.

Since then I have had best luck using the alarm and notification stream. My media audio defaults to using an altered eq setting that takes several LONG seconds for voice through a say action to be heard.

So, I have found the media channel for my device less than ideal. But other than that... zero problems.

You are correct, the acapella voices and speech synthesis engine is far superior to SVOX. It is nice to have 'lol' pronunced as 'laughing out loud' automatically in text reading. There are several other things that it does that leave me impressed at times.

Specifically, what task or profile is causing the most issue?

If you're looking for decent TTS voices I'd suggest things from Cereproc I own Heather Caitlin and William from them and they all sound excellent. I've noticed with Heather and Caitlin that sometimes you'll get that odd peak when it says some words. But with william I've heard very little of that. They're excellent sounding voices, well worth the around $1.50 for them.
