I guess it depends on what your phone sees when a device is connected .  If you get a notification you could trigger on that.

Anyone has an idea how to monitor connected devices to WIFI tether?

so in googling:
How to see who is connected to your hotspot on Android?
  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  2. Tap the gear-like icon to access the Settings menu.
  3. In the Settings menu, tap on Tethering & portable hotspot.
  4. Tap on Wi-Fi hotspot.
  5. See the number of connected users and their MAC addresses under Connected Users.
so I check if you can find the MAC address with a Test Net action?
or see if AutoInput can read that screen for you?   Sorry maybe there is a JavaScript that can pull that info out programmatically that tasker can run.

No, test net action does not give me info of devices connected to my
hotspot (only gives me info on Wi-Fi that I am connect to).

So I guess it is impossible to trigger actions based on new device
that connects to my hotspot?

Using the swiping and tapping on settings icon and all that manual
procedure is too unreliable and only works when screen is on so not
practical when phone is in pocket for example.

Use the Logcat Event context. There should be logs for connection and disconnection.

Yes it's true. Logcat sees tether activity and connections. This is
awesome, I need some time to wrap my head around it though.

It works flawlessly with a string AP-STA-CONNECTED, will do some testing and use grep gor finetuning. Joao is a genious. This feature is super crazy!
