I have managed to find a potential solution using the information here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/u/tasker-tips-tricks/launching-hotspot-paired-car-bluetooth-t3675366) and the Nougart+ Tasker Tethering Toggle plugin.

I will test over the next few days.

Please use the beta. I've fixed it there :)

Hi joaomgcd!

Great work on Tasker!  I'm a big fan.

I'm using the beta (5.5.5) on Android Pie, but I'm still getting an error.  Here's a screenshot: https://photos.app.goo.gl/DiSK21Eh4pMTTxUZ7

I've tried various solutions, including granting Tasker root access (Magisk).  Separately I've also tried the Nougat tether plugin, which is not working either.  Seems like Android Pie is a challenge for Wifi Tethering control.

I hope this is helpful in fixing the problem.  Thanks again!

That means that your network operator blocked third-party apps from using tethering. Unfortunately there's nothing I can do about that, sorry!

Thank you for your contact.

Join: connect multiple devices (send pushes, remote SMS, notifications) on Android, Windows, Mac, Linux
Tasker: customize/automate anything on your phone!
AutoApps: add advanced functionality to Tasker via plugins

Hi João,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question, I appreciate it!

I'm using an unlocked Pixel 2 XL. I am able to enable and use wifi tether by clicking the hotspot icon in the shade, or by enabling it manually in network settings.  My carrier (AT&T) does not prevent this.

Also, I have the line "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" in my build.prop file, so my phone should not even be checking with the carrier at all.

If the phone doesn't prevent me from tethering manually, is there any other way to get Tasker to enable the hotspot, perhaps by just enabling hotspot in the network settings the way I do manually do it in the UI?

Thanks.

Chris

What I mean is that the carrier prevents apps from doing it. At least that has been my experience with that error... Unfortunately the mentioned permission is not a permission that normal apps can get, only system apps. Sorry!

Would it help if I make Tasker a system app?

Hey Chris, have you tried making Tasker and/or the plugin a system app? I'm facing this same issue and I'm hoping to avoid having to root my Pixel 2 XL. But if I can confirm that it works, I'm willing to.

Cheers
