When will we get native support for Beacons? Seems like a no brainer for Tasker!

What's a beacon, and what do you want to do with it ?

Beacons as in iBeacons, BLE Beacons, SticknFinds, Estimotes, etc... Would like to use them for location detection within my home. I realize there is a Estimote Plugin for Tasker but it's restricted to Estimote and developer appears to be unresponsive...

Use the BT Near state and click 'Low Energy Devices'.

I've setup the BT Near to detect some beacons and it kind of works but not real well. The biggest issue is the scan internal which I have already set down to 30 secs. In the examples I've seen with the Estimote plugin the detection and release is instant.

I believe if there were 2 options/features added then it would make this a usable solution until something move complex/complete was available.

Feature Requests:

1. Add an option so that you can trigger a BT scan on demand. I could trigger this scan when the screen come on or when I show my scenes. As it currently is more often then not I'll already do the task manually before the BT near profile will pick it up.

2. Ability to clear any existing scanned BT devices. The existing detected devices stay active long after they are out of range.

This could simply be one command "BT Clear and Scan" which would remove any existing detections and do a new scan on demand.

Thank you and happy holidays!

After further testing with BT Near it's simply not usable for effective location detection. 9 out of 10 times I end up manually doing the task cause the profile didn't trigger yet. Can we please get a method to trigger a BT scan on demand?

This works for me:

01 Test (275)
A1: Secure Settings [ Configuration:Settings - [Bluetooth] .Settings$BluetoothSettingsActivity Package:com.intangibleobject.securesettings.plugin Name:Secure Settings Timeout (Seconds):0 ]

That description is tough to understand.

Plugins > Secure Settings > Launch Activity > [choose the Settings app] > [select the activity from the description above]

This opens the BT settings page, which scans automatically when opened on my device...if BT is already on.

Thanks for the tip however unless I'm missing something here its really not a feasible solution as it needs to open the Bluetooth settings page which would be disruptive of current activities. Wish Pent could chime in here... We really need a way to trigger a BT scan in tasker and considering that tasker can already control the interval it would seem that is certainly possible.

Yeah, it does. You can use AutoInput or if you're rooted you can use a keyevent to hit the back button so it only flashes for a second, then goes back to whatever you were doing. Not the most elegant solution...but the easiest I could come up with in a few minutes.

If you Google "android Intent Bluetooth scan" you'll get some good info. You could probably make a perfect solution with the new java actions...Not sure. I didn't research too long, but if you can find an intent, that's probably your easiest solution.

Where there's a will, there's a way!
