RE Search and Replace on "Binary" Data?

Can search and replace handle binary (non-printable) data? The strings I search for are indeed printable/readable. But they are interspersed with stuff that is not. So far, I am having no luck so thought I ought to ask.

I thought about running the data through the strings command and working with that result. But I didn't get far there either.
