Upgraded to Android 12, lost my double press power button customization on Pixel 3

I am a basic user of Tasker.  One of my most used modifications on my phone was a double press on the power button of my Pixel 3 turns on my flashlight.  Default on Pixel is to open the camera app.  Upgrading to Android 12 caused me to loose this function.  Basically, I had the double power press trigger the tasker secondary app.  I set it up so long ago that I don't clearly remember where I was able to set the secondary app to be triggered instead of the camera, but I think the setting was removed in Android 12 upgrade.

I have searched for a couple of hours without finding any solution.  I use my flashlight all the time, and just pulling out my phone and double pressing the power (even if locked) was super convenient.  I would be willing to do an alternate button (like volume buttons instead) if it was as convenient and would work from the lock screen as well as unlocked.

Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Hi,

You could try turning off "Quickly open camera" setting in Settings > System > Gestures. (phone settings)

Then you could try turning on "Secondary App Enabled" in Tasker Preferences > ACTION.

After that, try opening "Tasker Secondary App" from launcher and following the prompts.

I didn't totally follow through the process, because I use the open camera gesture all the time. Hopefully this helps you get to the right spot.

Cheers,
Brenden

Unfortunately Google broke it :(

Please let me know if Brenden's suggestion helps, thanks.

@Benden M,  I do not understand what should happen when I try to open the secondary app from the launcher.

I would love a quick physical button press to toggle the flashlight still if anyone could point me towards a solution.

Hi there,

I'm not absolutely sure but looking at the dev's instructions:

https://tasker.joaoapps.com/userguide/en/help/eh_secondary_app_opened.html#:~:text=Allows%20you%20to%20react%20to,task%20on%20a%20Samsung%20device.

"Allows you to react to the opening of the Tasker Secondary app.

This can be used, for example, to launch a task with the double-tap of the power button, instead of opening the camera, or to map the Bixby button to a task on a Samsung device."

So the secondary app would be associated with the "task" the turns on the flashlight,

Then, you map the double-tap to the secondary app.

THEN, double -tap should run the task for the flashlight.

I have a profile and task set on my Pixel 3 that I shake up and down and my flashlight turns on at night, and I also made it turn off using the IR near the ear speaker and turn off if the light turns on when I toss my phone on a pillow. So I don't press buttons, I use the shake profile with low sensitivity (harder to turn on accidentally).

The double-tap might have to link to a task that as you say "toggles" flashlight, not just turns it on. I'm not sure otherwise about using same button press to turn the light off.

Hi Brenden,

Thank you for your effort.  I already have the task written, and was using it for a long time.  When the secondary app is triggered, it toggles the flashlight.  The difficulty is that Google allowed the double-tap to be mapped on Android 11 and prior, but as of Android 12 they have taken away the ability to customize what gets launched with the double tap.  I don't see a way to set it any more.

Again, I could change to a different button or action, I would just like a quick and easy way to turn on the phone flashlight, preferably even when the phone is locked.  I will check out your shake to turn on the flashlight... that may be an adequate replacement.  I don't have time to try it right at the moment though.  I'll let you know how it goes when I do get to it.

Hi there,

Yes, it looks like you're right. There is no request to re-map the double press at any point, so the double press cannot activate the secondary app. Bixby enabled devices might have a way, but Pixel on Android 12 seems to have no method. An Event > Hardware > Double Press Power option, when the System gesture for opening camera is turned off, could do the trick. I tried Event > Hardware > Camera Button but that did not do it.

Perhaps this is an Android 12 bug. When I turn the camera open shortcut off and double press power button from home screen, my wallpaper flashes a little. Like the system is trying to do or could do something, like ask me what it should do when I perform the action, but it does not much....

How about the Volume buttons?

Hi there,

I tested, using the Tasker Permissions app on my computer via USB Debugging to allow volume long press detection, and it works perfectly to turn on the torch task without invoking the Secondary App. I set to long press on volume up as Torch on and long press on volume down as Torch off. Convenient profiles!

It was a bit of button pressing getting the permission app onto my computer, but it did work out as desired by the end of the process.

I used a State context of "Display OFF" to make the volume button-torch profiles only activate when the screen was off. Is there a way to contextualize the volume long press detection so that while the display is ON, it behaves as normal? Just nice-to-have :)

Wow, thank you for taking so much time to help with this.  I have tied it to my volume down long press to toggle the flashlight.  I am sure I will get used to it being different with a little time.
