I accidentally uninstalled Tasker, and I had not made a manual backup of recent projects. (This was before Tasker could do automatic backups to Google Drive. I love that feature and wish I had it when this snafu occurred.)

The good thing is that there was a recent backup of my Tasker data in the built in Android Cloud Backup system. (See attached picture.) I set Android to restore saved data when apps are reinstalled. Then, I reinstalled Tasker. Unfortunately, Android did not restore the backed up data.

There are new settings in Tasker to better control Android Cloud Backup. Under Preferences | Misc I turned on Android Cloud Backup. Then under Data | Restore I chose Android Cloud Backup. Tasker gave a message, saying 'This will overwrite existing data. Continue?' I thought I was getting somewhere. I chose 'OK'. But, then I only received an error message that said, 'Error: -1'. (See attachment.)

The other thing I've tried is waiting a few days after Tasker has been reinstalled to see if Android's automatic restore feature would kick in or if Tasker could now access the backed up data. But still no luck.

I sure wish I could access the data backed up by Android Cloud Backup. Does anyone have any ideas I can try?

Thanks.

I agree that standard Android Cloud backup should be available. This is one of several use cases for this capability. Other use cases include moving to a new phone and having to do a factory reset.

Sorry about that. I need to get this working.I haven't looked into the code of it yet, I'm not sure how it works yet. In my experience as a user it never worked either, but I also never really needed. I'll try to make it work!

Thanks for checking into it.  If I can recover this data sitting in Android Cloud Backup, I'll definitely setup the new auto-backup feature in Tasker, so that I shouldn't get caught in this situation again.

Well, unfortunately the Android Cloud Backup is gone.  In the attachments on my original post, I showed a screenshot of the Tasker backup in Android Cloud Backup.  That backup was from August 25 and was 220.1 KB.  The date and size of the backup are what assured me that it contained the app data I was looking for.

As described above, I set Android to automatically restore app data when I re-install apps, and I re-installed Tasker.  For several days nothing happened.  However, at some point in the past day or two it looks like Android finally took the data from the newly installed Tasker (which was minimal, because I had not created anything in the new installation) and overwrote the data that had been sitting in Android Cloud Backup.  Attached is a screenshot of the Tasker data now in Android Cloud Backup.  It is only 6.7 KB.

Lesson learned... use Tasker's new automatic backup features. :-)  I'm thankful to joaomgcd for adding this new automatic backup capability.  The new automatic backup feature gives the choice of using Android Cloud Backup or Google Drive.  The Android Cloud Backup system seems to be unreliable when it comes to restoring data.  So, I plan to use the Google Drive automatic backup feature going forward.

Totally unreliable for Tasker only, because it works like a charm for any other app. I'm wondering why it's so hard to fix it for Tasker but really easy for other apps.
