Just released a new beta! Don't mind the "bf" (stands for bugfix) at the end (my mistake),this one has a bunch of cool new features :D

As always, you can sign up for the beta here.

Get the app factory for this release here.

Here are all the additions for this version:

- Export as URL: revolutionizing the way Tasker data is shared. Tasker/Profiles/Projects can be exported as URLs and to import them, user simply needs to click on the URL with Tasker installed. Demo here.
- Custom Setting State/Event: monitor Android's settings so you can react to their changes. For example, turn the volume down when night light is enabled
- Badges for new States and Events
- Option to keep wifi on with Wifi Tether
- More Custom Settings that will be automatically found

Find out more about this release (including what bugs were fixed) here.

Let me know if there are any issues :)

So I can make an URL on one device and then use Join to send that URL to my tablet and it will overwrite the existing task with the same name?

So after a quick try out. I exported a task from my phone to URL and sent it to my tablet with Join. Copied the link and pasted it in the Chrome address bar on my tablet. No good. It tried to search. So, I pasted it into Firefox on my Tablet. It worked. But it over wrote my locked Task without asking me.

Yeah, Chrome will do that :P In chrome it has to be a link on a web page for it to work.

Oh, I never actually used locked tasks before. What behaviour would you expect? Asking something like "The task already exists. Want to overwrite it?"?

That's what I would have expected. If there is already a task, profile, ect. with that name, at the very least a warning should be shown that data will over written. It would be nice if the name of the import could could be changed at this point.

I would like a warning if it's going to overwrite any task with the same name. Could see myself helping someone with their task called "Home" and accidentally over writing my task with the same name.

But with locked takes I would like to see a warning, maybe with a red background?

Yeah, maybe an extra warning when it's a locked task. What do locked tasks do differently from others exactly? Sorry for asking, but I've never used them as I mentioned :P

Locked tasks makes you enter a pin before you enter the task and make changes.

I locked this task because I have some settings that work on my tablet, but not my main phone. I use it as a reminder not to change anything or risk breaking the task on my tablet. I find it easier to have both phone and tablet share one Tasker backup.

Concur with the overwrite warning and option to rename.

However one big thing seems to be missing - the ability to import from url inside of Tasker?

Since say you want to put the Task/Profile inside an existing Project for example, and/or you have the link in the clipboard - can the be an option when the Task Tab is clicked to Import > From URL and then an input dialog pops up asking for the URL?

I this is a great idea! The first time I tested this I exported the URL to the clipboard. Then I realized that it couldn't be imported from there.

Oh, I know, how about it Tasker monitors the clipboard for a compatible URL and gives you the option to import it as soon as it's detected? :)

By the way, let's see if the URLs work here.

TinyURL is the answer! www.tinyurl.com

It's the only shortner service that seems to accept the giant chunk of compressed data Tasker generates, and turns it into an http link that can be put pretty much anywhere.

Including directly into the url bar of any mobile browsers I've tried.

Can create the URL either by going to the TinyURL website and pasting the data chunk into the input box, or - use their direct API link and put the Tasker data chunk at the end after "url="

http://tinyurl.com/api-create.php?url=

If ya wanna get crafty you can create a Task that does this automatically. In fact I made one that takes Tasker url/data and stuffs it into a TinyURL link - click here to import it!

P.S. When choosing a Scene in the Scene Tab to "Export > To URL" it instead exports as if it's "XML To Clipboard" that was chosen.

Ok, I'll give that a try :) thank you for testing. Did you try with a real large project? Do you know if they have any url length limit?

Seems easy enough, although very large projects may be problematic because of limitations with HTTP GET max url size. Will have to test.

Linkception! :D

If tinyurl works out I can simply ask the user if they want to "shorten the URL to make it easier to share in forums". :)

P.S. When choosing a Scene in the Scene Tab to "Export > To URL" it instead exports as if it's "XML To Clipboard" that was chosen.

Thanks, will fix!

- Custom Setting State/Event: monitor Android's settings so you can react to their changes. For example, turn the volume down when night light is enabled

Awesome! Ever since I stopped using root, managing the night light setting has been a headache, but this will definitely make it easier. I've been testing it on my Pixel 2 XL and it works great when using the Custom Setting State to monitor changes in the night light status, but it doesn't seem to work when using it as Custom Setting Event. Example: Profile uses Custom Setting Event to watch for the Secure setting night_light_activated = 1 and run a task, but the task doesn't run when manually toggling the night light from the notification shade or in the settings. Is that as intended?

Either way, for my purposes, the State is working fine and that's AWESOME! Thanks for the update!

So I'm trying out the beta - in the change log it says "Fixed error message when running Create Directory action". For me at least, yes the error is now gone but there's another message instead - "Utils: warning:mkdirIfNeeded: failed to create dir: /storage/emulated/0/Tasker"

.. The directories I ask it to create do get created (and none of them are in /storage/emulated/0/Tasker or anywhere inside it!)

Thanks

Android P introduced a Lockscreen Lockdown (Android Settings->Security & Location->Lock Screen Preferences->Show lockdown option  --- This adds a button to the power menu when you long-press the power button) which locks the phone such that it disables smart lock, fingerprint, etc and can only be unlocked via password/pin/whatever. It also hides all notification content on the lockscreen. This is all temporary and the device reverts to normal lockscreen behavior after the phone is unlocked once.

Is there anyway to kick this on via a profile/task? I'd ultimately like to be able to do it via voice with AutoVoice and Tasker. Right now I'm using System Lock, but this seems like a more complete solution if it can be used.

I haven't been able to find it if it is there. I figured I'd ask here in the beta thread since it is part of Android P and I assume that if it is in Tasker then this is the first build it is likely to be in.

Is it possible to make Tasker capable of importing a task from the human readable description that can be exported from Tasker?

Alternatively, it would be amazing if it were possible to integrate something like GitHub into Tasker so that version control and all the other features that GitHub offers.

Finally, I tried using TinyURL, but it gave me an error. Here is the URL that I tried to shorten: https://pastebin.com/AB3kRK8s

BTW: The task at the URL in the pastebin above is a task that replaces a notification from IFTTT that there is a new XKCD comic from the RSS with a notification that opens the mobile webpage for that comic.

Nope, not possible. Not all needed data is there.

That would be amazing but very hard to implement :) But having the Github API integrated would indeed be handy... Can you add that request here so I can give it proper priority? https://tasker.helprace.com/s1-general/ideas Thanks!

I installed another app just to be sure the intent is still sended by the emmitting app (and it is).

Then when the beta graduated to stable I update tasker and everything keeps working fine. Maybe something goes wrong with the update ...

Even more confusing is that for a txt file, file opened condition doesn't work at all, but file closed event will be triggered when opening a txt file and nothing happened when closing a txt file.

There is something wrong with toasts (Alert/Flash) and it seems to be only a problem with Android >=8. Somehow it seems that they aren't queued anymore.

1. If a task contains more than one toast they seem to come all together now (overlapping). In the past they were shown one after each other.

2. If two tasks, each with a toast, run directly after each other (manually, with shortcuts from the home screen) just the toast of the first task is shown.

So maybe it's just a problem with Android >= 8.1

I've just tested it with MacroDroid with the same result. So it seems
to be just an issue of Android 8.1.
I've even tested to use the AutoTools toasts, but without any luck.

Nevertheless it's annoying and it would be nice if João would find a
workaround for this.
