In order for this event to work, Tasker's Search Helper should be
selected as the activity to handle the press when Android shows the
relevant dialog

If you have a search hardware button, then when you long-press it an app is
launched. You can only use Tasker to respond to long-press search if Tasker
is selected as the relevant app to launch.

I never have been able to locate the stock setting to change the default actions of buttons.  This free app can make clear it and make the dialog come up the next time you use it, allowing you to set the default.

It's usually under the prefs for the app that's the current default.

A terrible system I always thought.

there is no long search function on my device now, that App above
didnt help at all either nor listed hardware buttons link to apps...
i found it by pressing long search and seeing what app was called and
then finding it in app manager, where it said NO DEFAULTS were set for
launching even tho it was launching, and so couldnt clear any
defaults, had to hit disable instead.
only google search which i have disabled did anything before , and
only on a few screens.
now, nothing on my phone responds to long search including tasker
nor does any default dialogue come up on long press menu button.
long search, i have no way of setting its function, and i still dont
know what 'taskers search helper' is nor where to find that.

all im really looking to do is assign any of the buttons on my phone
at ALL to tasker, there seems to be no settings to assign ANY of my
hardware buttons as a context.

you seem to be giving me one button choice only, and instructing me to
assign taskers search helper (whatever that is, theres no reference
for what that is), to long press menu button (which is 'search button'
right)

thanks for your time.

You prompted me to look into this a little closer because it work flawlessly for me.

First of all, do you have a profile that uses the context of Event->Hardware->Button:Long Search?  If not, this is what will be run when you get this running.

Secondly, if you have a default action, the only way I found to clear it is to go into the adroid settings->applications->manage applications, pick the app and if you scroll down you will find a section "Launch by default".  Press the Clear Defaults button and the next time it should bring up the dialog to pick the application associated with the button.

If nothing seems to happen, it may be launching a background task or possibly a Tasker Task that doesn't do anything visible (from a previous attempt perhaps).  The application I recommended does not show the search button default in the Category Wise listing however the default app does show up in the All Defaults list but there is no explanation like "Audio Streaming, Calendar Events, Car Dock, etc.  The only other one in my list without an explanation is people.  If you select clear for the suspect application, it will bring up the system manage application screen.  You can clear it there.

Why Android indicates it is launched by default but not inform you of the conditions is beyond me.

As for other buttons, some have found success with the volume buttons by monitoring the change in the global volume variables.  Won't work if the volume doesn't change (ie. pressing up volume when already maxed out)

Hope this helps.

The monitor keeps restarting whenever I use the Tasker Search Helper as the option in the Long Search menu that Android brings up. This has been hapenning since b2 for me. Anyone else have this issue ? Can someone point me out to a solution ?

I found out about the monitor restart from the log.
