Has anyone had any luck using a text message based context with a 3rd party messaging app? I really do not like the built in messaging app on my Samsung Galaxy S4 so I downloaded Textra. However, now the Tasker does not respond to any text contexts.  I sent an email to a Textra Dev and he said "We certainly don't block anything and run at the lowest SMS broadcast priority. I suspect that app is looking for stock database change events." Anyone have any ideas?

>suspect that app is looking for stock database change events

The dev is correct. If they're not using the standard text DB it's not going to work
unfortunately.

The best solution would be for them to implement a condition plugin
component in their app (wouldn't take long...)

You could try using two profiles to get a similar effect.  The first would be used to trigger an awareness of having received a message - use a Notification context for this.  The second would trigger an awareness of having read the text - use an Application context or Notification Click context (or use both, and have 3 profiles) for this.  I'm sure it's not perfect, but that's basically how my original missed notification reminder profiles worked.

Thank you for the confirmation. I will update the Textra dev with the link you provided.

I never considered that. Would this trigger the action every time a receive a text though? Is there a way to only trigger the action when the notification contains certain words?

The "Received Text" event never happened! Yes, Tasker can't grab new sms arrived event in early version of MIUI ROM(because MIUI has a high priority above 3rd app to process system messges). Not long ago, MIUI give an option to  user about which app can handle the new sms arrived event. You can find the option in "SMS -> Settings -> other - Advanced Settings -> System - Set as Default":

Although I uncheck the "Set as  default" option, the "Text Received" event in Tasker never happened when new sms arrived. I also tried AutomateIt, it can received the sms event with the "Set as default" option unchecked. With "Set as default" checked, both can't grab the sms received event. So I think Tasker maybe need to fix something about the "Text Received" event.

I am also interested in making Textra work with my Tasker profiles.  I checked the old Textra change logs (http://inapp.textra.me/changelog) and it looks like back in version 1.20, they did something to try to make Tasker work and even specifically called out Tasker as should be working.  Looks like it's still not working though as both you and I are having a problem.  I tested both the "Received Text" Event context and the "Unread Text" State context and both do not work.  I am about to email the dev also. Did he reply to you with any updates?

Check and make sure that in android settings > Accessibility > Services > Tasker is set to On.

It is on. And with that accessibility service, Tasker can see notifications coming in but the "unread text" state and "received text" event contexts don't work.  Using the notification context is a decent workaround for some of my profiles but I really have one extremely important one that currently doesn't work...  I am required to have my phone on silent all day at my office but my wife is 8 months pregnant. They're really strict and don't even like people taking their phones out of their pockets to look at texts. Before, my wife could just text me the word "emergency" and my phone would fire up and ring loudly. But now, this profile won't work because the "received text" event context does not work.  Obviously, I'll switch to another texting app if necessary but I figured contacting the dev first to see if it could be fixed quickly would be worth a shot.

Yea, you don't want to miss any calls/texts in the next few weeks. If you decide to change text message apps, I 'd suggest you use Titanium backup and then backup your current app, uninstall it and install the other app. That way, when you want to go back to the current app, you can restore it from the backup and avoid having to set it up again.

Good luck :>)

I just made a simple task that flashes "Cool" when ever I get a text and that worked fine. I use Sliding messaging.

Ya I'm actually not rooted on my Droid DNA (first phone that Ive ever not felt like rooting) but I'll just use Helium and that works fine. Looks like there's nothing I can do with regards to this Textra context problem though unless the dev decides to cooperate. Hopefully, enough people bother him for it haha. Thanks bob

I e-mailed the developer and he said they are looking into it and it just takes time. Hopefully it's closer to the top of their priority list than other stuff but if you are reading this and are a textra / tasker user, quickly shoot him an e-mail and I bet we can get the ball rolling.
