to Tasker
Hello,
I work in an industry where cell phones must not only not be carried
on ones person (must be stowed in a bag), but also powered off while
on the job.
Thus I was wondering if Tasker can be used to help automate this
process in case I forget to power it off (perhaps in conjunction with
a plugin?) to power off the phone entirely.
The part where I am having trouble is on the Action end: I don't see
an internal action to power off the device, and if I try to use the
Locale Execute plugin to execute a shutdown command, nothing happens.
(Also in terminal emulator, the command 'shutdown -h now' does
nothing, so I assume this to be some a limitation of the OS?)
Phone is a Droid Bionic.
Appreciate any help... thank you.

I forgot to mention that I am executing the shutdown command in
terminal, as well as execute plugin with superuser permissions.

I believe "reboot -p" will shut it down.

There's a Reboot action in the Misc category with a shutdown option.

long press on one of your home screen, click widget find tasker, click
New Task...name it shutdown...click the + click on Misc, reboot...on
type goto shutdown. now give it a icon and hit the check. now you have
widget shutdown on your home screen.

I go to work, get back home, and find a slew of answers! Thanks
everyone for all the help, you guys are awesome! =)
I realized the Bionic has a "Sleep" option on the shutdown menu ("low
power, instant on, wireless off") which for I believe for my needs
should be just as good as an actual shutdown (minus the reboot time,
which would be helpful). Does anyone know how I might be able to
invoke said sleep mode...?
Thanks again.

Hi, I tried to follow this advice on 'shutdown' so I can set my player to shut down at a specific time e.g when I slept off. However on getting to the step where you say '...click the + click on Misc, reboot.' I notice the 'reboot' doesn't have a red mark beside it and when I clicked on it, it says, 'Sorry that action is unavailable on this device'. I am using the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 (It's just an MP3 player (no phone function) and running android gingerbread. I have tried all the shutdown apps on google play but can't find any as they all required 'rooted device. Pls how can I find a solution - to be able to set the player to shutdown at set times when playing music.
