I did a fair number of google searches as well as searched this forum and did not find an answer to my problem.

I want to have a context that senses a left-right shake, and runs a task that advances the next track on my music. In the media control task I have Cmd = Next and Simulate Media Button = on. It works great!...as long as the display is on. As soon as the display turns off it doesn't seem to even sense the shaking. Does shaking not work with the display off in general, or is my phone the problem? Any ideas.

BTW, love Tasker so far!!

I have an HTC Incredible 2 running Android OS 2.3.3

That's correct, gestures/shake events are only possible with display active. You can find that info e.g. in the built-in help (preferences, monitor tab, hit menu and choose help)

And that's because your battery would run out very quickly otherwise.

Yeah, I see that point, and that's what I suspected. There are apps in
the appstore that do this very thing, and a major complaint is the
drain on battery life.

OTOH, I only want to use it when I'm riding my motorcycle down the
road listening to my headphones, so I would be willing to pay the
price in battery consumption.

Oh well, thank you for the quick responses!

I would hope to put in an option for this (also things like light and
proximity sensor while off).

would love this.
it's a good measure to have it default to how it behaves now, but certainly an option to allow more advanced users who know what they are doing to be able to do what they want would be great.

thank you.
