There's an AutoVoice Recognize shortcut.  Just use anything that can activate a shortcut.   For example, WidgetLocker has a swipe option from the lock screen that lets you choose several different apps or shortcuts to activate rather than unlocking your device.  I have AutoVoice Recognize set up  as one of them.

Also, you could use AutoVoice Continuous if your android mini pc is always plugged in to power. Then you don't have to start anything - just say the command.

Bob I tried auto voice continuous and it works but it's buggy. I have a mele pro and it seems to stop working after a few minutes. Ideally I wanted to have microphones set up with avc to do everything hands free

I don't have sound so I could only watch what you did.  I think I got the gist of it pretty well, though.

For a stop gap before you get the microphones set up you could either use AutoRemote and other Android devices, like a phone, to act as the voice receiver and then send the command to your home automation computer.  You can also try a Bluetooth headset.  I've never done it, but from what I understand you can get AutoVoice to take commands from a BT headset after you press the button.

I've done both. Bluetooth would have worked nicely but the range was minimal. I do have my note 3 connected with auto remote and my mele remote pro has a built in mic.
