Is there any way of connecting to a specific WiFi network (by name
etc)? I can trigger on specific networks, but that doesn't guarantee
that the tablet actually connects to them.

I would put in another vote for this feature. In my office I would love to use Tasker to manage my "preferred" order of WiFi connections.

+1. I have multiple WiFi connections in some locations and need an
intelligent way to tell my phone which one it should be connecting to.

Does Android allow ordinal arrangement of known WiFi SSIDs? If so,
Tasker needn't be involved other than to turn WiFi on, off. Let
Android handle the preference part?

+1 also. This would be a very useful feature.
At work, I have two APs, the one in the whole building is terrible,
the one in my office is great, but the device keeps connecting to
the first one because is the one it first sees when I arrive at work.

Nope, I need to use the other wifi when not in my office.

I've made a profile that "kind" of works.

Has anyone actually read Hagbard's post?

THERE IS A PLUGIN TO DO THIS!

It is possible, using the Plugin from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ultimatesoftware.nw.SSIDSelector, where you can select the SSID and the Plugin will connect you exactly to this wifi.

Following Hagbard's suggestion, there are apps for just anything, so why bother working with tasker at all?? This is not a tasker solution.

BTW, this is not a "plug-in", but an app, and a non-free one.

An app with a plugin built in so Tasker can control it...It should appear in the plugin section once it is installed. That app offeres some functionality that Tasker Lacks and provides methods for Tasker to use that functionality. Just becuase it doesn't NEED Tasker to run is irrelevant. It is much more powerful when you do use it with Tasker.

If you happen to have the apps "Trigger" and the Tasker plugin "Auto shortcut" you can do it fairly easily. Go into trigger and create a new task. It doesn't matter what you set as the trigger. You then set the action to connect to whatever WiFi you want. Then in tasker, create a profile that triggers when you're near the wifi you want. Then, for the task, you just need to use Auto shortcut to run the task you made in trigger.

Should do the job quite simply.

Thx Nick77, your way seems to work, while the other apps and plugins mentioned above didn't.
