No, hardware buttons are too low level for tasker.

You might be able to do this with the AutoInput plugin.  It has an option to suppress key inputs, and I know it can override the volume buttons.

I am interested in that, but I downloaded and can't figure out how to do it, any hint?
thanks!

Create a task.  Under the Plug-ins category, select AutoInput Modes.  In the configuration screen, choose "Key Suppress" and then "Enable".  Under the "Keys" section, scroll down and select the entries for the volume keys.  Ok everything and back out.  After you run the task, your volume keys will be ignored.  To turn them back on, create another task as above, but choose "Disable" in the configuration dialog.  Run that task and things will be back to normal.

If you want the volume key to do something else, you can create an Event profile using AutoInput and capture that key while the key suppression is enabled.

Hope that helps.

by the way, can I make volume buttons work when I press home button and then volume button?
can I disable power button as well?
is there a way to stop the task I created easily? I can't find a "stop running" button in tasker!
thanks!

You should be able to do that.  If you suppress the Home key as well, you could create a profile for it that disables key suppression, then your volume buttons would work as normal.  I'm not sure about suppressing the power button; I don't have my tablet with me at the moment to check.  Just scroll through the list of keys in AutoInput to see if there's an entry for it.

The tasks that I described won't stay running.  It's more like flipping a switch; they do their job and just exit.  That's why you need two tasks; one to turn it on and one to turn it off.

However, for other purposes Tasker does have a "Stop Task" action that you can use to kill a long-running task. I believe it's in the "Task" section of the action list.  You just need to supply the name of the task you want to kill.  For best results, the task you are trying to kill should be running at a lower priority than the one doing the killing.

I followed the same process for Volume Button and I added an entry for Power Button (named "Power" in AutoInput)
it did worked, but not 100%
while it blocked to open the power button menu, it also closed the screen
it should just do nothing, right?
any hint?

I'm on break at the moment and away from most of my tech, but you might try creating a profile for the power button so that it does something simple (like beep) and see if having that in place will override the screen closing.

mm not sure how to do that
but again I wouldn't like it to beep when I press the power button
isn't there a real solution?

The beep is just a suggestion; you can have it do anything, such as set a local variable (that you don't need).  The point is to give it something to do that might take the place of the default action.  You just need to create an event profile with AutoInput as the context and catch the power key. It may or may not work but it probably worth a try.

it doesn't work
shouldn't it work just by supressing the power button? otherwise why they have it as an option entry?
and I paid them for their program!
I am very disappointed
