Hello,

Just heard about Tasker and it sounds very good and powerful!

I just purchased a MyTouch 4G for my daughter. I would like to
control some of the things she can do with the MyTouch- for example,
shut off internet access while she is at school, and completely once
she reaches a set data amount.

I am pretty sure tasker can handle the first, can it handle the second
based on current data usage?

Second, I need to make sure that she can't uninstall Tasker. Is the
program password protected or can it be hidden so that she cant simply
uninstall or reboot to remove?

Thanks- James

Sorry, no, data metering is still on the todo list.

You can passcode Tasker or individual profiles. To make uninstall
difficult, you can passcode protect the settings app, though the other-
app protection is aimed at young kids, older ones will probably figure
out a way around it. I aim to tighten that up in the future.

You can also enable Tasker's device administrator, which means it
can't be removed via USB if she's technical and will make it
impossible to directly delete from the 'Manage Apps' dialog until
it's disabled.

AFAIK, the only way to 100% foolproof completely protect programs is the way OEM do it: compile your own rom, not rooted, with the application set up as an impossible to uninstall app ( the way some bloatware is out of the box).
If you install e.g. launcher pro you can hide some apps from the app launcher, thus complicating the path to uninstalling in some cases. Though she could still open the "paremeters" configuration menu and find the app there, uninstall it. Maybe tasker can password lock the access to the parameter "app", to be tested.

To password lock tasker : Maybe tasker can protect itself, by setting up a task of the type
App Launched : Tasker
Task : Password Lock
I have no clue if this even works.
Otherwise there are passwordlock apps but I've always find them unhelpful or unreliable.

To do perfect foolproof parental control with tasker is possible I would guess, but I wish good luck with this project !

No, there's a Tasker UI preference for it.

Thank you for your replies. I'm not looking to make it foolproof
(that would probably just eliminate me) btu would like to make it more
difficult for her.

I wasnt sure from the first reply (Pent) if Tasker will or will nto
let me shut down cellular data connection based on location, time of
day, or completely (with no regard to how much data has come down the
pipe). I'm not as worried about her accessing via wi-fi.

Thanks in advance for all your input- James

Would it also be possible to initiate a shut down/block of cellular
data cia a sms text message.

For example- I send a text message that says "over data limit" and
that message will tell tasker to block all data download (shut down
the data conenction)?

Should be. Try the trial:

Yes. I would pick a text that's less likely to trigger by accident
though :-)

Can you add the app to a custom rom then flash? Tasker then becomes
part of the OS and cannot be installed without some technical
expertise? True, this is not foolproof but I find that while kids can
type 200 wpm on a tiny keyboard and know how to do all sorts of things
on Facebook they are generally clueless on the more technical aspects
off hardware and software. Call it the Steve Jobs dumb down effect.

sorry if this is a double post. get a data monitoring app that will
generate a notification when a limit is hit. use that notification to
drive a tasker profile to turn off data.

there may be a ready-made app that can do this already. I think I
used to have one but it was some time ago. Might have worked in
conjunction with juice-defender.

there are apps that will monitor data usage. I used to have one that
worked in conjunction with another app that would actually cut off
data usage after a certain limit.

OR

get one of the data monitoring apps that you can set an alert when a
certain cap is hit. use that notification to drive a tasker profile
to turn off data
