Hi,
I'm trying to add left and right cursor keys to navigation bar (I use them heavily at typing - autocorrect does not do its job :) ).
Are the marked two functions on the first pic actually the left and right cursor keys?
When I add them (pic two) I was expecting to get the cursor arrows (marked red), but all i get is a blank space with no function.
Any ideas?

Regards,
Stipe.

Those might not work on all phones :) If they don't, try using the Custom Button option and see if that works.

Yup, got it running with custom keys (Dpad left and right) and custom icons, thx for your effort.

Now, an additional issue... is there a way to trigger this Navbar task only when my keyboard is showing? I'm using Swiftkey and the "Keyboard out" state doesn't do the job... I mean, it sometimes triggers it (not always) but switches back after a few seconds...

I have to ask, you do know that SwiftKey has arrow keys, right? It's optional to display them. Maybe it works better in the nav bab and that's why you're using Tasker? Just wondering cuz I just use SwiftKey's arrow keys.

Oh, sure, I know and I have used it, but they take additional valuable space (whole row) on the display. Besides that I only need left and right (up and down are kind of obsolete for me), so these two in the Navbar are perfect solution for my needs.
Thx for your suggestion though :).

I feel the Same and will most likely add these as well. I did find a nice addition by Google to there standard keyboard just lately. On my pixel 2 xl android 9 I can slide my finger along the space bar to move the cursor. It does get confused with the long press option of space bar Wich brings up the 'change keyboard ' option but with some practice I find it works well.

I figured that was it. I might try this myself because the Swiftkey arrows do take up a lot of space. I have alternated between displaying them and not displaying them, but when I don't I usually find I need them, so I turn them back on. ;-).

That spacebar functionality is how the keyboard works on my iPhone (which I have for work). It is a nice feature. I wish more Android keyboards would adopt it (but I figure it's probably an Apple patent or something like that, so they don't implement it).

OK, now I would like to take this a step further :).
I've noticed, that some apps (I guess immersive mode only) change the color of the navbar. The issue is, that the built-in icons (back, home,...) change their color automatically according to background (see attached pic), but my custom icons don't.

Is there any trick on creating custom icons in a way that they would adopt to this change?
I thought about changing icons (selecting icons in darker color) regarding to custom setting "navbar_current_color", but the color doesn't actually change, only the immersive mode makes it look different.

Also, regardless of the color I use creating custom icons, they always appear white in the navbar...

Ok, trying to get this going.   I can add the custom buttons but the action->input -> navigation bar  only has 3 option left / center / right.  How are you arranging your buttons?

Thanks,  Rich.

You can stack more than one button to each field, f.e. I stacked "recent" and "Dpad left" to Left, "home" to Center and "Dpad right" and "back" to Right.
Just click the Magnyfying glass once again after adding the first button and add another one... as many times as you like :).

You can add multiple buttons to each of the Left, Center, and right buttons. Just seperate each button by a comma. So for left, you could have something like pin[1.0],recent[1.0] and for right, you could have back[1.0],key(210:file:///storage/emulated/0/Tasker/Icons/Material/android.png)[1.0],key(210:file:///storage/emulated/0)[1.0]

Ahhh..  Posted too soon. Got it. Just add more buttons to the field (comma separated )..

Now I can't find the "change keyboard" option for the custom button?  Seems like that should be a stock item..

Hm, not sure about adding it directly... but you can always create a task for changing keyboard and add a "Task button" for that task instead :).

Yup, that looks like the only option...  Thanks for the help. Hopefully we can get the color thing straightened out..  This is awesome...  Been waiting a long time for something like this.

It would be great to have the option 'select all ->  / select all <- '   like the Google text editing keyboard gives. IE select all text from cursor to end of text file or beginning of text field.  I am guessing it could be done with auto input....

This is starting to look like a bug.  After more testing I noticed my changes to the nav bar stick through the reboot.  What happens is just my downloaded icons ( left and right arrows and a keyboard) will not be shown (or are there but invisible ). If I tap the location they are supposed to be in then the action does occur. The other icons show just fine but they are the system ones IE- back, home, recents.

Any one else seeing this with a reboot?

Yup, same here...
Also saw an error message at startup in the log (maybe related, maybe not, I can't say for sure) that root acces is missing for using a bitmap file from external SD card... so I assumed Tasker may not be able to acces custom icons (I have them on my external SD card) right after startup and after all systems are fully loadded, it can again.

Still, coloring the icons for light backgrounds is my main issue :).

Is there any way to be able to use the same button for multiple purposes.  IE tap / long press / tap twice?

If you select magnifying button and then the Task Button action, you should get a pop-up that asks you what task you want to select for double tap. Not sure about long press, I haven't gone that far yet!

Yes but how would I use that same button for a single tap with different actions?

When you select the Task Button, then select the task you want to run. Then it asks you if you want to add an action for a double tap. If you select yes, then you choose another task. It will then ask you for three taps.

However at the moment, with the Tasker version I have, it's going crazy 🤪 and not letting me tap without taking me to the lock screen right now so I can't test it!

Ahh, ok, got it... Working as expected over here....

Thanks Robert....

My select text to beginning/ end is now working great.  This will allow me to select a word  at a time in either direction or all the way to begin or end with the same button.... Awesome....

Well, I would still like to know how to make navbar icons in different shades of gray. For now, they are all the same light grey no matter which colour I use.

Unfortunately there's no way. Android itself tints them so even if they are colored, they'll just end up white anyway. Sorry!

How could we make them follow the same color as the andoid icons. When the bar changes to white they turn grey. Our custom icons stay white and turn invisible.

Could you also give the option to change the color of the bar?

Unfortunately I don't control that. I simply set the icons and Android manages the colors :( Sorry. It's a bug in android itself it seems.
About changing the color of the bar, on my S9+ it can be done with Custom Settings but I don't think there's a way to do it on all devices...

That works if your app is showing, not system wide as far as I know. When those navigation bar coloring apps are running do you get a warning that there are apps showing overlays?

Every app I have used to mod the nav bar has been an overlay. These apps typically require a persistent notification stating there is an overlay to work. I like a clean status bar so I never kept them.

Yes this app does have the overlay permission. It does not however have anything in the notification bar.

it will definitely draw over other apps as the pic I included was for Gmail.

OK, issue solved with latest Good Lock and NavStar update... for me at least :).
In NavStar you can also configure the Navbar (although quite limited, compared to Tasker) and the custom icons automatically change color as the built-in do, if you turn on adaptive icon coloring.
Thx all of you for your contributions anyway.
