I thought 1x, 3g, 4g, etc. was for data and calls used the same thing that non-smart phones did. Not true?

2G is more battery friendly, it sucks less juice, but 3G has much faster internet speed, so why waste battery if no internet used? Just when we use mobile data, we can have 3G or 4G

This way it should save even more battery.

Any suggestions from advanced users on how to make that work?

Use an app context if its only a few apps which need 3G (normally the
browser and youtube maybe).

Or just put a toggle somewhere on your home screen. You can only
automate the switch if you have a fixed set of conditions which can
'predict' when you need 3G. If there's no way to summarize an
exclusive list of conditions, then tasker can't help you, because
AFAIK 'reading your mind' isn't even on the long todo list =)

There is enough of having 1 trigger - Mobile data ON
When this state is triggered, Tasker could switch to 3G
When Mobile data is OFF, Tasker should switch to 2G - GSM

Toggle on screen means no automation, it means manual clicking
