So what I want is for a scene to pop up with a menu, and if nothing is selected after 5 seconds, the scene goes away. I swear a couple weeks ago I was able to specify a timeout value for a scene and had this working, but something happened and my popup scenes got messed up and I haven't been able to find where to set the timeout.

The Menu action has a Timeout parameter.

What screen is that on? I know I found it before but I am going crazy because I feel like I have checked every menu and screen in the scene. Here is where I thought it was:

Sorry about deleted posts, it was posting multiple pictures, then I replied to myself... I wish you could edit.

I must be missing because I can't find it. Where is "Menu *action*"? I have a scene with just one item, a menu item. When I click the menu item I get the screen above. I don't see anything about a timeout in there. I checked the scene options and don't see anything there either.

Tasker scenes do not have a time out option. I have always thought this would be a very useful option (Hint, Hint, wink, wink..)

Pent is revering to the action / alert / menu . This is a action that is added to a task.  Other tasker 'actions' like action / alert / pop up have time outs as well.

It's trivial to do your own isn't it ?

Show Scene with Continue Task Immediately, Wait Until afterwards, Destroy Scene.

ohh, I guess I never really tested it. I "assumed" those time outs work like a display time out. IE destroy scene after x seconds of no user interaction. My mistake..

uh oh....  I just was testing this with a action / variable / variable query  and found that action does not work on my pixel c tablet  /  Android 7.1.1 /  Tasker  Version: 4.9u4m

The query scene comes up and will show the soft keyboard but It will not accept any input.

The action works fine on my  rooted Motorola Droid 4 / Stock ROM   / Tasker  /  Version: 4.9u4m / Android version 4.1.2

Luckily we have a Pixel C in the family these days too, will give it a go when
I can get hold of it.

Thank you both. I figured out the problem, before I was doing an Alert->Menu I am guessing and now I am displaying it as a scene. I am leaving it as a scene and I have just added a 5 second wait and then a destroy scene after and it is working exactly how I wanted.
