I'd like to be able to have tasker perform an action that locks the
phone and/or turns the screen off. This actually is possible in
android 2.2 for an app that is set to be a device administrator.

Can tasker request device administrator privileges and incorporate
this feature? See the app in the market: "LockScreen". It is a
widget that essentially performs this action - but i want tasker to do
it based on certain conditions.

Chime in if I'm wrong Pent, but I'm pretty sure this is a limitation
of Android, not Tasker. What I do is use a context of Proximity
Sensor + Orientation (Upside down) to fire a command to WidgetLocker
to lock the phone and put it into Vibrate mode. This way, when the
phone goes in my pocket, it's always locked and set to vibrate.

I'm guessing you're not using a 3rd-party locking app. Does the
Screen - Lock command in Tasker not work on your device??

cheers
