to Tasker
I am new to Tasker and I am trying to replace as many apps as I can
with this great app. I am trying to figure out how to (or even if it
is possible to) replace WeFi https://market.android.com/details?id=com.wefi.wefi.beta.
WeFi automatically connects to any open WiFi network without having to
prompt your phone to connect to each network.

I would like to periodically activate WiFi when away from my home to
look for an open network that is available and connect to that network
automatically without ever having to select the network. Then when out
of range my phone will automatically disable WiFi and begin searching
again. I am already using WiFi Automator so my phone will already
handle disabling WiFi when not in range. Any tips on how this could be
accomplished either through Tasker alone or in combination with WeFi?

Thanks,
Kevin

I've never actually done this but i do see a pretty big hole in this
logic,

Many businesses offer "free" wifi, and while they appear to be open
and allow you to connect they won't allow you to get any kind of data
access until you open a browser and accept they're terms of use. I
don't know how your WeFi app handles this but I'd think that it would
be somewhat complicated to handle that particular case in Tasker.

Im not sure if I really get it but there could be some kind of ping test. Activate wifi - look around - connect to open wifi - run command (ping www.google.com) - if ok, cool - if not ok, delete and place into list "do not connect again" ... the list would be for tasker only, so it wont attempt to connect it again, but it wont block you from connecting manually ... Is this possible?

Since these types of systems redirect you to their login page no matter what page you're trying to get to, another way to test for such a page is to look for a known-to-be-non-existent page, such as http://blah.blah.blah.  If you successfully connect to the page, then you are likely at one of these pages.  (I'd give credit to the originator of this idea, if I knew who it was):

HTTP Get blah.blah.blah [type: text/plain]
If %HTTPR = 200
<login page found - do appropriate stuff>
End If
