determine array length

How can I check the length of an array, %VOICE.length?
My thought being that a for loop requires a max, %VOICE1:max:increment

Is there a language I could read up on to give a clearer picture of programming techniques/practices similar to the style Tasker?

My scripting background is primarily javasctipt and some PHP. Web based.
