Yamaha serial numbers are recycled every ten years, 29 formats are supported here based on research available on the yamaha website. There is some overlap between formats and in those cases multiple results will be generated. If you encounter any inaccuracies please email the web master

During the early stages of production, ESP guitars were not well documented in terms of their serial numbers. As a result, ESP serial numbers that predate the year 2000 cannot be relied upon to determine an exact date of production.

The accuracy of dating guitars produced in the 1980s and 1990s can be problematic due to careless record-keeping. Some models from this era lack serial numbers altogether. Even with neck plate serial numbers, the exact date can be difficult to determine because plates with only the ESP logo were also used. Moreover, numbered plates were often produced in advance and assigned at random.

In 1975, Shibuya started his own company in Tokyo, which initially had only three employees. The company primarily focused on guitar repairs and the production of guitar parts.

The top-quality ESP guitars are still made in the ESP factory in Japan, while the more affordable LTD line is manufactured in different locations throughout Asia.

1. You may be looking at major repair problems down the road. Only a handful of piano makers, including Yamaha, build pianos specifically for the three major world markets: Asia, which is a moist climate; Europe, which is fairly dry by comparison; and the U.S., which is considered to be extremely dry. (Keep in mind that we are talking about the INDOOR climate, as opposed to outdoors.) In winter, heating systems remove substantial moisture from the air, and in summer, air conditioning systems also lower the humidity. In addition, American homes tend to be better insulated than homes in many other countries, further isolating the interior from whatever moisture might be in the outside air.

If you or someone you know is being offered a gray market Yamaha piano, or if you want to verify whether or not your Yamaha piano was built for use in the United States, you can use our free serial number finder tool available here.

Our Stairstep trapeze-style tailpiece offers a slightly spongier feel than a standard stopbar, due to its suspending the strings above the body of the guitar. This same suspension that occurs behind the bridge results in extra harmonic frequencies ringing out while the strings are played, which some players prefer. Those looking for a traditional archtop or semi-hollow feel should try out our Stairstep option, while those who are looking for a more modern, taut string feel that provides little give should head towards our stopbar option.

Typically, yes. The first letter indicates the location where the instrument was made, and subsequent digits indicate the year the instrument was made. Example: A serial number starting with W17 indicates the guitar was built in Korea, in 2017. See below for location initials.

Good evening.

I have two new Yamaha guitars, I think they are from 1961 or earlier, one is the C40 and the other is the C 60 the serial numbers that appear are 61029058; 71010006 respectively, I would like you to help me to know its value.

The same I have a new Brazilian guitar Giannini, year 1956.

You can see how their serial number system is very confusing and how its hard to tell from a lot of the systems they used and a lot of duplicates. I think your best option is to contact Yamaha to see if they know.

Sir, I have a guitar with the numbers OLN0087S a Yamaha and I do not know how to figure what the worth is of this guitar. My husband passed and left me with two this one and a Fender plus a Japanese one also. Can you help me find out what the worth of this one is. I have a hard case to keep it in and it is in excellent shape with no scratches or anything on it. I want to sell these and do not want someone to cheat me on these items. Thanks Susan

Dating B.C. Rich neck-through guitars is relatively easy, although slightly imprecise by the 1980's. Beginning in 1972, the first B.C. Rich guitar was stamped 'Proto', and subsequent guitars were consecutively numbered beginning 001, 002, 003, etc.

Before we begin, we should state that we no longer stock new B.C. Rich guitars. However, we do get them in from time to time as part of our Pre Loved offering. So we certainly recommend checking that part of our site out!

When distribution came back to B.C. Rich in 1974, a system of serial number coding began using a 5-digit code (XXYYY) with the first 2 digits indicating the year and the last 3 indicating the production number. That would make the first guitar of 1974 to have been numbered 74000, followed by 74001, 74002, 74003, etc. Throughout the '70s, production numbers were low enough that the serial numbers pretty much reflect the year of manufacture.

In the late '70s as production grew, the serial numbers begin to get ahead of themselves since only 1000 numbers were available in a series. With production growing rapidly by 1980, the serial numbers had gotten about two to three years ahead.

Although neck-through production never surpassed approximately 2200 guitars a year, as the '80s progressed, the serial numbers continued to get ahead of the actual year. By 1981 the numbers were about four years ahead. This gap remained fairly constant until Bernie Sr. turned the production over to Class Axe in 1989.

Bolt-neck guitars are less precise for the usual reasons. The serial number is stamped on a neck plate, and like every other company, when the guitar was being finished, someone grabbed a plate out of the box and put it on in no particular, precise or documented order. These do not follow the same XXYYY dating scheme as the neck thru models.

If a guitar has a number of 89321, for example, it was probably built in 1987, but it could have been assembled a bit earlier or later than 1987. If it is a USA model, it will say "Made In The USA" on the headstock just below or beside the B.C. Rich script logo.

The serial numbers are a bit hard to date because there was no uniform way they were assigned a number at Bernie's original shop. The neck plates were pre-stamped and pulled out of a box at random when it was time to install the neck onto the guitar or bass.
