Silicon Valley Culture under Fire
Dr. Jan English-Lueck, a Professor of Anthropology at San Jose State
University and a Distinguished Fellow at the Institute for the Future,
was selected Outstanding Professor at San Jose State in 2004.
Since 1992, she has worked with Chuck Darrah at San Jose State
to develop the Silicon Valley Cultures Project, conducting research
on the region’s distinctive culture. From this research emerged the
books, Cultures@SiliconValley (2002), winner of the 2006 Diana Forsythe
Prize, now in its second edition (2017), Busier than Ever! Why American
Families can’t Slow Down, (with Darrah and Freeman) and Being and
Well-being: Health and the Working Bodies of Silicon Valley.
Dr. English-Lueck will give an overview of her work on the Silicon
Valley Cultures Project, describe aspects of current Silicon Valley
culture and its culture of work and technological optimism. She will
also discuss the problems that have emerged in the region and how
the future might unfold.
