Phyllis Whittlesey
The Parker Solar Probe: Humanity's First Visit to Our Star
Phyllis Whittlesey, Ph.D. is a postdoctoral scholar at the UC Berkeley
Space
Sciences Laboratory and an instrument scientist on the Parker Solar Probe.
She earned her undergraduate degree in physics from the University of Texas
at Arlington and her graduate degrees from the University of Alabama in
Huntsville.
The Parker Solar Probe, with a launch window between July 31 and August
19, 2018,
will swoop to within 4 million miles of the sun's surface, facing heat and
radiation like no spacecraft before it. It will provide new data on
solar activity
and make critical contributions to our ability to forecast major
space-weather
events that impact life on Earth.
Phyllis will give an overview of solar physics, summarize the mission of
the Parker
Solar Probe, and talk about some of the outstanding questions solar
researchers are
hoping to solve with Parker Solar Probe data.
