Position Overview The National Centre for Indigenous Studies at the Australian National University is seeking an outstanding candidate for the position of Research Assistant which will have a fundamental role in ensuring the effective operation of two research projects being undertaken within the Centre regarding Indigenous incarceration and alternatives to incarceration: one project is aimed at testing the theory and methodology of Justice Reinvestment in Australia; another used Citizens' Juries to explore alternatives to incarceration for Indigenous Australians.
The role offers an exciting opportunity to be responsible for data collection and analysis and administrative duties related to these projects and to learn about the evidence that is building in this research field.

Role statement PURPOSE STATEMENT
The Research Assistant has a fundamental role in providing research assistance and assisting in the operation of two research projects being undertaken within the Centre regarding Indigenous incarceration and alternatives to incarceration: one project is aimed at testing the theory and methodology of Justice Reinvestment in Australia; another utilises Citizens' Juries to explore alternatives to incarceration for Indigenous Australians.
POSITION DIMENSION AND RELATIONSHIPS
The Research Assistant works as part of a team, reporting to the Research Fellow. The work involves working with the Research Fellow to on two research projects associated with Indigenous incarceration and alternatives to incarceration to achieve project outcomes.
ROLE STATEMENT
Under general direction, the Research Assistant will:
. Provide research assistance in support of the research project including identification, collection and analysis of research materials.
. Assist with the coordination and administration of project activities and resources such as team meetings, conference attendance and other associated activities of the projects.
. Assist with development and maintenance of databases and documentation associated with the research projects utilising Microsoft Office suite of software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
. Assist with the writing and preparation of research publications, presentations, reports and funding applications.
. Develop and maintain positive working relationships and collaborate with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
. Ensure a high level of accuracy, confidentiality and integrity in data input and maintenance to comply with University standards and protocols.
. Comply with all ANU policies and procedures, and in particular those relating to work health and safety and equal opportunity
. Other duties as required, consistent with the classification level of the position.
Selection criteria
1. A relevant degree or an equivalent combination of extensive relevant experience and education/training. An interest in issues related Indigenous Studies will be highly regarded.
2. Experience in undertaking research projects, along with demonstrated high level writing skills with experience in undertaking literature reviews, and in preparing reports and/or other publications. Experience in the area of Indigenous health and wellbeing will be highly regarded.
3. Demonstrated computer skills with experience in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) or similar and an ability with the capacity to become proficient in new IT packages.
4. Highly developed organisational and analytical skills and demonstrated ability to use initiative and to work as part of a team with minimal supervision.
5. Highly developed oral communications skills with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders including Indigenous organisations and an ability to act with diplomacy and discretion when dealing with sensitive and confidential issues.
6. A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies and a commitment to their application in a university context.
ANU Officer Levels 5 and 6 are broadbanded in this stream. It is expected that at the higher levels within the broadband occupants will have a deeper understanding, and a more independent application, of the research theory and techniques.
