I could claim that mathematicians, like other academics, are needed in the universities to teach a specific population of students the skills needed for the development of a technological society and to keep a somewhat broader population of students occupied with courses that serve to crush the dreams of superfluous applicants to particularly desirable professions (as freshman calculus used to be a formal requirement to enter medical school in the United States).

His mother, a gentile from Hamburg, raised Grothendieck in the south of France. There the boy showed talent both for numbers and for boxing. After the war, he made his way to Paris to study mathematics under the great Henri Cartan. Following early teaching stints in So Paulo, Kansas, and Harvard, Grothendieck was invited in 1958 to join the Institut des Hautes tudes Scientifiques, which had just been founded by a private businessman outside Paris in the woods of Bois-Marie. There Grothendieck spent the next dozen years astonishing his elite colleagues and younger disciples as he recreated the landscape of higher mathematics.

The primary mission of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is to provide high-quality mathematics education and critical thinking skills to our diverse student population. We provide leadership, expertise, and service regarding applied and pure mathematics, mathematics education, statistics, and data science to the College, the University, the surrounding communities and throughout California. Finally, as a community of scholars, the department contributes to expanding the corpus of knowledge of mathematics and statistics.

We acknowledge and are mindful that Chico State stands on lands that were originally occupied by the first people of this area, Mechoopda, and we recognize their distinctive spiritual relationship with this land, the flora, the fauna, and the waters that run through campus. We are humbled that our campus resides upon sacred lands that since time immemorial have sustained the Mechoopda people and continue to do so today.

In 2009, researchers at the University of Memphis implemented the afterschool program Jackson-Madison Intelligent Tutoring Systems Evaluation (J-MITSE), with the Jackson-Madison County Schools in Jackson,Tennessee. The program randomizes 6th grade students to either a treatment group that uses ALEKS software to tutor students in mathematics or a control group that uses human tutors with structured lesson plans. This thesis focuses on the control condition only to examine the pros and cons of a structured program that has specific topics scheduled, whether the afterschool program influences behaviors, attitudes, and math ability in the regular classroom, whether the human tutors in the program are reinforcing or introducing topics, and whether reinforcement in a structured environment contributes to gains in math scores. Results indicate that the control classrooms, while mostly reinforcing topics from the regular school day, have positive effects on student behavior and performance in their regular classrooms.

In this paper, we propose that the emerging transformation of mathematics professional development from a practice-based to a research field would benefit from stronger connections to research on learning. In particular, we contend that design experiments represent a premier emerging methodology to study learning, and we argue that a better understanding of teacher learning through the use of design experiments in mathematics professional development can lead to improvement of mathematics professional development as both an area of practice and a field of research.
