TARRACE Update Day 7 (12 December 2008)

Tonight we arrived in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire only about 6 hours behind
schedule catching-up once again due to the masterful drivers in Africa
and also with the help of a little extra expenditure. The Liberian
driver from Monrovia to the border town of Ganta, Liberia, Mr. O-Pa
hired out his 17-seat vehicle privately to us for the final 6 hours to
the border with Cote d’Ivoire. He was incredible over more very rough
unpaved roads with great driving and a natural gift in getting through
the numerous military and police check-points.
From the border we hired another great driver Mussa , a brash young
guy and his Mercedes 190 Diesel, who breezed through the more that 10
Army check-points to Abidjan without a single search or
interrogation. Worth gold to us.
We received another very warm African welcome from Mr. Camille Botty,
a medical instrument technician for Abbott Instruments and friend of
my Ivorian friend in Germany. Camille is a wonderful host and has
arranged for meetings with Dr. Elizabeth Assi and the president of the
local NGO for Sickle Cell Anemia.
We plan to depart for Accra, Ghana this afternoon.
We will keep you posted.
