Characters getting borked

I've noticed lately that some characters are getting "borked" after
going through tarpipe. Here are a couple of examples:

Since I use that workflow through Pedro Melo's XMPP gateway, I've run
a separate test with a new workflow and it's definitely a tarpipe
problem.
