A scowling winged goat-man, often holding a wand of fire, is an
unpleasant picture. Add to that all kinds of scary devil-like signs
and two captive humans, and you'll wish you never went in for that
Tarot reading. But let's take a deeper look. This card can save your
life.
What the Devil Card Really Means
Like all Tarot cards, the Devil has many meanings. Some depend on what
question you asked. Other meanings depend on the other cards in the
reading. But let's look at it by itself for a moment and decrypt its
essential message.
The basic message is actually a question: What are you holding on to
in your life, that is holding you back?
This is a card not only of self-examination, but a card asking you to
take action. It's part of the Major Arcana, which means it holds more
weight than cards from the Minor Arcana. (The Major Arcana consists of
22 of the deck's cards that are major archetypes; the 56 Minor Arcana
cards depict more day-to-day issues.)
The Devil asks: What are you in bondage to? Is it smoking? Drinking? A
toxic relationship? A job you hate? And then the Devil suggests: It's
time to release yourself from that bondage and do what it takes to
turn your life around.
Because it's a Major Arcana card, it's not whispering gentle poems to
you about choosing happiness. It's saying: You may be in trouble;
pinpoint the problem; solve it (and you can solve it - nothing in the
Tarot suggests a lack of free will); do it soon; do it effectively;
this is important.
Okay, so there's a little bit of a warning in there. This card comes
up when you already know you have a problem in some area and for some
reason you're letting the solution slide. The Devil is saying that the
time has come to stop procrastinating and do whatever it takes to free
yourself from this toxin in your life.
The Devil Card Demands Strength
Because this is a Major card, it's probably not talking about quitting
nail biting. More likely it's going to be an issue that requires your
full attention to resolve. If you've been drinking too much lately,
the card is suggesting that you take a deeper look at your drinking
and do what it takes to quit. Not easy, but definitely do-able. And
possibly life-saving. You can try a reading at the Psychic Tea Shoppe,
and see what comes up for you.
It's the same if you're in an abusive relationship. The card's message
is not rebuking you, it's saying: You can get help; you can get to a
shelter; you can re-build your life without him.
So don't be frightened by this card. But don't put it off any longer -
whatever it is. The Devil card is not a gentle whisper. It's a two-by-
four upside the head. It's saying "Make a plan and follow it through.
And then you can indeed be free."
