The Empress is the fourth card of the Major Arcana, actually
designated as III because The Fool is designated as card zero. If you
want to know the meaning of The Empress in both the normal and
reversed key, this article will give you some enlightenment.
The Empress, unlike The High Priestess, is a very active card. The
basic meaning of this card is one of growth, prosperity and fertility.
This card is one of the most sought after cards in a spread for women
who are looking to start a family, workers looking for promotions at
work and businessmen looking to take their business to the next level.
This card is especially significant in the fifth and sixth positions.
This card, however, is more than just the promise of these things. It
can also mean that the seeds that you've planted have taken root and
now it's time to enjoy the fruits of your labors. However, don't go
overboard, as overindulgence can lead to problems down the road.
The surprising thing about this card is that in many cases, the
rewards and gains are much greater than the subject anticipated. This
card will frequently come up in cases where people are about to win
the lottery, or in the fourth position where they may have just
recently won the lottery. Sadly, in many of these readings, the future
cards show recklessness and loss.
Usually, and more often than not, this card simply means that the hard
work that the subject has put into something is coming to an end and
the time for enjoying the rewards is near.
However, there is a downside to this card, as with all the cards of
the Tarot. In reverse, this card could signify wasteful energies that
are causing failure. This usually affects the home as well as income.
This usually occurs when the subject doesn't carefully plan out things
and does not manage their affairs properly. This is usually due to
simple carelessness.
Another meaning of this card in reverse, and much more serious, is
that it signifies a person who is suffering from extreme poverty. When
this card falls in the first or third position, this is usually the
case. Other meanings include a feeling of emptiness and hopelessness.
The Empress is a card of such extremes, as is life. One minute all is
going well and the next it seems like the world is falling apart. This
is a card that, while I enjoy seeing it in its normal position, I
would rather not see it at all as it can signify such hardship.
