to Tarkiln 2009
It was great to see everyone and set foot inside The Tarkiln after
almost two years. The November 2006 activities calendar is still
hanging on the back wall.
The good news: It's pretty much the same, but messier inside. The
interior has suffered some minor cosmetic damage from past
investigations. This is no more than a couple of weekend projects to
spruce up the inside and get it back to it's previous modest and
usable condition.
A thorough examination of the exterior does reveal a lot of old wood -
some of the shingles on the North wall are estimated to be over 100
years old. Most of it is still sound. We talked about what would
have to happen in order to put a coat of paint on it, how much
preparation is required…. Answer: It depends on how aggressive you
want to get. You could paint it “as-is” just to cover the bare spots
where the paint has worn off.
I had my lopping shears and used them to clear away the undergrowth
that was encroaching on the foundation and lower siding. Aside from a
few missing or damaged clapboards, the most pressing issue is the four
missing downspouts in the center courtyard. The water is flowing off
the roof, splashing onto the walls and draining into the foundation.
There's just no reason not to put up some aluminum downspouts and
ground redirectors. Short money, that.
Everyone seems to have emerged encouraged that the condition of the
building is really fine and we can bring it back into working use for
much less than previous estimates.
Anyone interested in learning more, please attend the next Tarkiln
2009 Study Committee meeting on Tuesday August 26 in the Mural Room at
Duxbury Town Hall.
