to Tarheel Hashers

Greetings, Fellow Tarheel hashers –

Hazukashii’s July article appeared in my email a couple of days ago, and the opening paragraph reflects his unwavering dedication to merging world travel and hashing – so amazing it seems practically superhuman.

Preface:.

It’s been a very active month worldwide, highlighted by a strong INTERHASH turnout in Yogyakarta with roughly 2,400+ hashers, great trails, lively socials, and the announcement of INTERHASH 2028 in Kuching, Malaysia (July 14–16). Smaller but significant milestones (like Jakarta’s 3000th run) and international tours continue to show how vibrant the global hashing community remains.

Looking ahead, while a few events are already sold out or postponed, there are still plenty of opportunities on the calendar—everything from regional weekends to major Nash Hash gatherings and campouts across the U.S., Europe, Africa, and beyond.

A couple of other interesting notes:

  • New activity in Uzbekistan with the formation of the Tashkent H3
  • A reminder of hashing’s long roots, with this month’s history section tracing origins back to 19th-century “paper hunts”
  • And, as always, a bit of humor and nostalgia from the “Way Back Machine”

Two of Hazukashii’s features -my favorites - reflect his levity, and who doesn’t appreciate some good humor, especially in these questionable times?

His “Thought for the Day” is about the quirkiness of the English language; no doubt, we can all relate to his examples. Ha!

The second feature is a newer development, “Calvin and Hobbes go Hashing”, and it is included as an attachment.  You remember those characters from years ago?  Well….they’re baaaack!

Bottom line:
Hashing is alive, global, and busy—something is happening somewhere almost every weekend.

 Greetings Hashers,

It has been a wild month of hashing . . . after an excellent event in Istanbul, Turkey with the Solstice Hash On Tour (SHOT), I stopped off to run with the Jakarta H3’s 3000th Run weekend, before heading on down to Yogyakarta for INTERHASH. All three were awesome events.

As for INTERHASH, we had an unofficial count of 2450 hashers on hand (official count still be assessed). After a couple days of prelube events near the main hotel, we had the Friday afternoon Red Dress Run, followed by the opening ceremony with dinner and drinks at a splendid venue north of town. This included bid presentations for who will host INTERHASH 2028.

The only issue of the weekend that I recall, was the beer lines were well over half an hour of standing in line, and in some cases up to an hour. The IH Committee took note of this, and had it all sorted by the next evening as part of the Main Event. The Main Event had 5 run sites, each with a short, medium, and long option . . . plus the very difficult 25 km Ball Buster trail that was a B to A back to the main venue.

Once all runners had finished trail, and had a short circle, we boarded our busses and headed to the main venue for the huge party night, with local cultural entertainers, dinner and dancing, and thankfully shorter beer lines.

Sunday followed the same routine with the 5 run sites, and follow-on dinner and dancing at the main venue.

Highlights included the down-down competition, with Oily Mango winning for the Harriettes, and Messiah winning the Men’s title.

Sunday evening also had the hasher skits, with the rowdy boys of Hammersley making the biggest splash. Finally, it was announced that the Kuching City H3 would host IH 2028, to take place on 14-16 July. Details and online registration at https://www.interhashkchswk2028.com

Well, Interhash is over, InterGulf has been postponed, and InterScandi is Sold Out!

BUT, if you are still looking for a great new adventure, check this out: Pan South America Hash was founded in 2021, with the first event being held in 2024. See what happened then. There is still time, and a few available regos for Pan SoAm 2026 to be held 20-22 Nov in Montevideo, Uruguay

HASH HISTORY:

So how did it all start? Well, long before the Hash House Harriers came to life in 1938 . . Let’s take a look back in 1867, when the Thames Rowing Club were looking for training activities to stay fit during their off season.

The first event they organized was a steeplechase on 7 Dec 1867, following that up with two more such events in Feb and Mar of 1868. Not fully satisfied with steeplechase, they created the Thames Hare and Hounds, and went full in for that old kid’s game, in order to capitalize on the success of the three organized steeplechase events.

Similar to the rowing club, these organized running events were competitive. A steeplechase is not a paperchase, so the actual adaptation of the paperchase would not take place until 17 Oct 1868, when a competitive version of the kids’ game emerged as a “paper hunt” with prizes given to the first hound to snare each hare. According to their website, the first run was announced as . . .

THAMES HARE AND HOUNDS – A handicap ‘paper hunt will take place on Saturday 17th October, starting from the King’s Head, Roehampton Bottom (one mile from Barnes Station) at 4.30 p.m. (3.45 p.m. train from Waterloo).

Hounds, who must be introduced by some member of the Thames Rowing Club or belong to an athletic club, rowing club, school, etc., will be roughly handicapped. A pewter will be given to the hound first to reach each hare.

Eventually, competition increased, and regional and national cross-country associations were established.

Cross-country races even found their way into the Olympics in 1924 over a varied and uneven course. As with many sporting competitions, wagering soon followed, and cross-country races were replaced by contained circuits on horse racing tracks. This better suited the odds makers, but removed the free flow of country running, and also no longer required paper.

Hare & Hounds clubs continue to flourish in the late 19th Century up through the present (e.g. Cambridge University Hare & Hounds since 1880, Edinburgh University Hare and Hounds since 1890).

Fortunately, some of these clubs remained more for fun, and stuck to the old cross-country fashion. One club that still runs the old traditional cross-country trails is the Cheshire Tally Ho Hare and Hounds Club running since 1872.

Thought for the day . . . More silliness of the English Language:

'Phonetic' is not.

‘Abbreviation' is 12 letters.

'Thesaurus' doesn't have a synonym.

'Monosyllabic' has five syllables.

Say what you will about English, but it certainly does have a sense of humor.
