Greetings, Tarheel Hashers!
Earlier this evening, Big Box/Theresa reached out with a great idea for March: joining Durham Creek Week (March 14–22), a long‑running community effort to celebrate, discover, and protect our local waterways. This tradition began in 2009 and has grown into a major Durham initiative.
As the oldest kennel in North Carolina, we’ve spent decades exploring trails that cross creeks, streams, ponds, and all kinds of shiggy. Pitching in to help care for these places feels like a natural fit — outdoors, together, doing good for the terrain we love to run.
With that in mind, Big Box is proposing a Tarheel Hash volunteer outing during Creek Week. Here’s her message:
“With no Tarheel hash scheduled for March, I'm proposing an alternative activity: Litter pick-up as part of Keep Durham Beautiful's Creek Week.
I've registered to clear litter in the stream adjacent to Woodcroft Shopping Center, roughly parallel to Woodcroft Parkway. Seems there's a bit of shiggy, so we'll be able to use our specialized hashing skills. (For good!)
When: Saturday, March 14, 10:00 AM–12:00 noon
Where: Park near Triangle Ace Hardware, Woodcroft Shopping Center, 4711 Hope Valley Road, Durham 27707
What to bring: Keep Durham Beautiful provides clean‑up equipment. Wear long pants and closed‑toe shoes you don’t mind getting muddy or wet. You may want clean footwear for the drive home. A water bottle, sunscreen, and insect repellent will be helpful.
Who’s in?!
Please let me (Theresa) know if you're interested, even if it’s a maybe — I’d like to see whether we can fill the volunteer slots with Tarheel hashers.”

And, my response to Big Box’s question:
I’m in! To learn more about Durham Creek Week: Check the website in the attached file.
I encourage all of you to mark your calendars and join us on the 14th to help “Make Durham Beautiful.”
PS: I’m thrilled to see the “I’m in!” replies already rolling in. Every person who joins us makes a real difference — and honestly, there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of seeing a creek look cleaner, clearer, and more beautiful because we showed up. It’s one of those simple, powerful, feel‑good experiences that stays with you long after the morning is over.
If you’re on the fence, come be part of that energy. You’ll be glad you did — and so will the lovely stream near Woodcroft Shopping Center!

Also attached is our current schedule as it stands now. This Creek Week cleanup absolutely deserves its place alongside our other upcoming hashes — it’s a chance for us to show up not just as runners, but as a crew that cares about the trails, creeks, and green spaces we enjoy all year. Adding it to the schedule feels exactly right: it’s community spirit in action.
Looking forward to meeting you this Saturday - and On‑On!
