The last mail has given a wrong impression about CMC Vellore
Please note that CMC has 50 % Reservation for Sponsored Candidates
There is NO Reservation whatsoever for Christians

By Sponsorship, you need to work in Remote Places like Tripura and Orissa etc for a fixed time. There is no religion attached with this

Of course, a candidate with low marks who is prepared to work in Andaman is selected instead of a candidate with high marks, but the criteria is your desire to serve in rural areas and not your religion.

1.    The seats are very limited.

2.    Few seats are reserved for candidates who are sponsored (They have to work in a mission hospital for a total period of 5 years - 2 before and 3 after the post graduation) The sponsored candidates can take the seats in open competition.

3.    The questions are set by the professors of the institution and they usually ask their favorite points!!! Which they repeat for umpteen numbers of times in their ward rounds and classes and questions which seem very tough to outsiders are reflex questions to CMC students............... This I feel happens in almost every Institute!

4.    There is an interview following this MCQ exam ............... again the same professors are there and their favorite questions come out........ (Why go to that level …….. The same things happen in Final Year exams where when a Unit chief of one exam comes as the Internal, that unit students get a cake walk where as others have a difficult time………)

5.    They give special consideration for a best outgoing student. As far as I know…. All the best outgoing students (from whatever college he or she may be) who appear get selected for interview……… but getting the seat is another thing.

6.    So if you are an undergraduate reading this…… get pumped up!! Grab a medal or two in your Final year and you have bright chances

There are a few more points worth noticing

1.    Even though the seats are very limited, seats are more than what is there in JIPMER(which has reservations for Institute candidates as well as community reservations and just 18 seats this year for Open competition),

2.    If you think that you can qualify for JIPMER you can do in CMC……..This point is stressed because I know a lot of people who write JIPMER entrance but not CMC Vellore Entrance, saying that the chance of qualifying here in CMC is less. That's not the case… CMC Vellore has more seats than JIPMER and no community reservations. Please check the prospectus and you will see this for yourself !!!!!

3.    Unlike what is being thought widely, the selection is NOT restricted to Christian students

4.    And They don't restrict their selection to CMC Students.... If any one meets their standard he/she is selected ... I know few of our seniors (not from CMC Vellore and all Non Christian) who got through........ after extensive preparation !!! (I didn't get through because I didn't prepare well !!!)

5.    This exam gives us an ideal platform to assess yourselves before JIPMER and the state PG Exams and like Kerala and TamilNadu PG Exams

Hi sowmya

Let me make a point very clear.. CMC is not strictly for christians... But if u get merit, U get the se at.... Its like Only christians work there.. I shud say,. they toil there for years together and they deserve a seat.. There has to be seat allocation for them... Thats why this name has come.... Its priority based.. But they respect merit and give u the seat, if u are the topper....

The best example is ME... am not a christian...

and shall i know why u dint choose diploma...

I am a diploma holder.. did my DMRT from MMC... then did my MD (ONCOLOGY) from CMC... i shud say, Diploma candidates are much sought for specialities in CMC.. U finish diploma and work there for 1 yr, i am sure that u ll be given ur masters next yr..

and if u do ur diploma , u can appear for DN B (2yrs) too...

Mail me more abt ur queries....  ll help u, if i can...

AND GUYS / GALS in this group... I need some MBBS buks and MCQ buks for my DM exam preparation... If any guys in this group are based near Annanagar, chennai , please let me know if i can share ur PG prep buks for my entrance examination..

I accept that there is no reservation whatsoever for christians in CMC ,Vellore..but i feel this is more in letter than in spirit..Only 50 percent reservation for sponsored cabdidates...
but when the sponsoring authorities are only christian organisations, how does one expect non-christians to get sponsored... rather indirectly, this is same as reservation for christians...isnt it?

Secondly working for 2 yearsbefore and 3 yrs after pgin remote areas (for both mbbs and pg) these days is not some reason that most doctors would hesitate to join CMC.. these days it takes 1 more year after intermediate to secure mbbs seat....and 1 more for pg seat...may be more...for e.g....consider AFMC where there is tough competition in spite of the fact that u have to work for 7 yrs after mbbs..and more after pg...in filed areas of the country...i dont think our case is more difficult than that...and it is not onlt christians who are willing to join afmc

Last but not the least...no medical graduate would approve of such a method of selection where luck factor plays so much role...i am talking of the professors of CMC being the examiners in interviews for PG selections...and cmc students having edge over others...this makes little difference in our final exams where one ward students have edge over others....but this is definetely not the method of selection for PG admissions....while all other institutions try to minimise this luck facto as much as possible ( by introducing negative marking....more than one option being correct...common objective criterion for selection) , why does cmc allow this factor to play a significant role....why not cancel interviews....if it insists so much on clinical skills, why not authorise some other institute of national importance to conduct interviews...in order to eliminate interviewers bias...I question the motive behind this...

Finally..if anyone knows the percentages of christians Vs non-christians securing admissions into CMC in any academic year, please tell me...even though there is no reservation for christians...any one who knows the figures will feel the happenings obvious...the scenario will become more obvious if this distinction is made for clinical and non-clinical subjects seperately...

N.B.: I respect christianity and am not against it. Let this be a platform for expressing our opinions and not one for abusing one another. In this respect, i appreciate Dr. Bruno  for his pleasant response.I am happy that i haven't received any adverse remarks as of now...

Let me give my opinion one by one

//I accept that there is no reservation whatsoever for christians in CMC ,Vellore.//

Thanks for accepting the truth. THERE IS NO RESERVATION for christians. There is reservation for Sponsored Candidates.

//.but i feel this is more in letter than in spirit..Only 50 percent reservation for sponsored cabdidates... but when the sponsoring authorities are only christian organisations, how does one expect non-christians to get sponsored... rather indirectly, this is same as reservation for christians...isnt it?//

Nopes.... The sponsored authorities sponsor those who have already worked in their institutions and those who give a bond that they will work for certain years after their post graduation

Religion does not come here.

It is the willingness to work in Remote Places that matters

(Please note that I applied for in Open Category for MS General Surgery and was selected in MD Pharmacology - my MS General Surgery Marks were 64 %, but I got the University Rank in Pharmacology in our batch - They give too much importance to this Rank and Medal Issues - Almost all our seniors / juniors who had a medal / best out going students were selected in Open Category Itself)

Personally me too is skeptical about this too much importance for the medals

//Secondly working for 2 yearsbefore and 3 yrs after pgin remote areas (for both mbbs and pg) these days is not some reason that most doctors would hesitate to join CMC.. these days it takes 1 more year after intermediate to secure mbbs seat....and 1 more for pg seat...may be more...for e.g....consider AFMC where there is tough competition in spite of the fact that u have to work for 7 yrs after mbbs..and more after pg...in filed areas of the country...i dont think our case is more difficult than that...and it is not onlt christians who are willing to join afmc//

Now you have missed an importance point... There is competetion for AFMC. But If you can get seat in JIPMER Pondicherry and AFMC Pune when your home is in Chennai, where will you join...

More over, If what you say is correct, there should be a long list of people willing to join in mission hospitals and working there for 2 years so that they can be sponsored later... But they are always calling for candidates to work there

This is not a bond which you can execute afterwards. Only IF YOU HAVE WORKED for 2 years, you can be sponsored

//Last but not the least...no medical graduate would approve of such a method of selection where luck factor plays so much role..//

Agreed :)

//.i am talking of the professors of CMC being the examiners in interviews for PG selections...and cmc students having edge over others...this makes little difference in our final exams where one ward students have edge over others....but this is definetely not the method of selection for PG admissions....while all other institutions try to minimise this luck facto as much as possible ( by introducing negative marking....more than one option being correct...common objective criterion for selection) , why does cmc allow this factor to play a significant role....why not cancel interviews....if it insists so much on clinical skills, why not authorise some other institute of national importance to conduct interviews...in order to eliminate interviewers bias...I question the motive behind this...//

Agreed :) :) :) They have to get rid of that stupid Interview System. Or at least they have to conduct those interview by external faculty

And here to AIIMS and JIPMER should get their exams papers set by other professors and not those from AIIMS and JIPMER In AIIMS and JIPMER the percentage of Undergraduates from AIIMS and JIPMER are more in their respective institutions

I am NOT defending CMC Vellore. I am saying that CMC Vellore, AIIMS, JIPMER and all those Institutes need to amend their ways

//Finally..if anyone knows the percentages of christians Vs non-christians securing admissions into CMC in any academic year, please tell me...even though there is no reservation for christians...any one who knows the figures will feel the happenings obvious...the scenario will become more obvious if this distinction is made for clinical and non-clinical subjects seperately...//

Moreover, I can tell that almost all the Best Out Going Students who applied to CMC Vellore got selected from our colleges. Sample names - Bala Shankar Gomathi, Vijayakumar.

There is a bias, but the bias is because of Sponsorship.

If you have a candidate who is willing to work in Remote Hospitals for 2 years, and is not offered a job by the Sponsoring Institution, please give the list. Then we will know the exact picture.

Can you tell me at least 5 doctors who wanted to work in Remote places in Hospitals, but could not get appointment. If your comparison to AFMC is to be correlated, then the percentage of applications received by AFMC and the percentage of application received for Jobs should be same. But they are not - The reason is the poor pay in the sponsoring hospitals as compared to the very cozy lifestyle of army doctors. - The perks and other factors for doctors working in Army is far far greater than what a doctor gets by working in these hospitals. So I feel that they cannot be compared

//N.B.: I respect christianity and am not against it. Let this be a platform for expressing our opinions and not one for abusing one another. In this respect, i appreciate Dr. Bruno  for his pleasant response.I am happy that i haven't received any adverse remarks as of now... //

There is no need of any adverse remarks.
You give your views. I give mine. If I feel that what you say is justified, I correct my views....

And Now, if you can tell me that there is a bias in selection of candidates for appointment in the sponsoring hospitals and only christians are selected for working in sponsoring hospitals, please give evidence

The increased number of christians getting selected is due to the increases number of Christians volunteering to work in remote places That's all

Bruno

The increased number of christians getting selected is due to the increases number of Christians volunteering to work in remote places That's all

I wonder why only christians are volunteering to work in remote places...Is it because they are more inclined to serve?...Coming straight to the point...I dont think it is the desire to serve in remote places, but the easy way to secure an MBBS  seat in a famous college as CMC,Vellore drives them to apply.
I dont think any one would hesitate to join a top institute like CMC,Vellore just because they haveto serve for mere 2 years in remote places with less pay. Consider my own example...I could not get admission into MBBS in statemedicalcolleges immediately after my intermediate ...and i had to waste 1 more year for preparing again...i was successful then...but if i could not have made it in my 2 nd attempt ,i would have wasted 1 more year...Even in my 2 nd attempt, i secured admission into a medical college, which though recognised by MCI, is not so famous as CMC...so.i, infact anyone ,given a chance to choose would opt for studying in CMC and working 2 years in remote places...its not at all difficult considering the advantage of studying in CMC and an assured MBBS seat..isnt it....do u agree with me...so working for 2 yrs is not at all a hassle for most of us,if not all...Moreover, that gives eligibility for sponsorship again for post graduation...and since if u have graduated from CMC ,ur chances of securing PG seat again in CMC are high...Moreover, one will also be getting reservation in some national institutes if they work in rural areas for 2 years...Again working for 3 years after PG is not a difficult task if u are assured of a PG seat...it may take 1,2 or more years to get a PG admission somewhere else...

In the light of the above facts, tell me ... would anyone hesitate to serve mission hospitals in remote areas for less pay for 2yrs for MBBS and 3 years for a PG degree? I dont think the majority of us would hesitate.

So, I strongly disagree with the above statement that the increased number of christians getting selected is due to the increased  number of christians willing to work in remote places.

Here you have missed a point...The 2 years before PG that most christians work in mission hospitals in remote places for lesser pay is because they were sponsored for MBBS...and this gives eligibility for further sponsorship for PG.

Quoting your own statement.....
The reason is the poor pay in the sponsoring hospitals as compared to the very cozy lifestyle of army doctors. - The perks and other factors for doctors working in Army is far far greater than what a doctor gets by working in these hospitals. So I feel that they cannot be compared

I again totally disagree with the above statement...Again have missed some thing very imporatant....the time...which if not considered will totally give a false picture...Ask yourself ...Is it difficult to work in mission hospitals in remote places for 2 years for lesser pay or in filed areas  in different parts of the country for 7 years with the so-called ''very cozy lifestyle of army doctors".
Enquire and ask some MBBS doctor working in army...and if they say its "very cozy", you can take it for granted..Remember to ask an MBBS doctor and not some specialist or super specialist working in central hospitals....

Review

In this era of super specialization, almost every post graduate in medicine harbors a desire of acquiring training in a specialized way. One of the most fascinating branches to students of medicine is cardiology. Though there are many books of multiple choice questions for post graduate entrance examination, books for super speciality entrance examination are very few.

This book compiled by three physicians from the Cardiology Department in GB Pant Hospital provides a comprehensive and authoritative collection of MCQs, succinctly presented and up to date

However, the references are conspicuous by their absence

The book has 11 sections

  1. GB Pant - 10 years - 1995 to 2004

  2. AIIMS - 12 years - 18 papers - 1993 to June 2004

  3. SGPGI - 7 years - 9 papers - 1998 to Dec 2003

  4. Srichitra - 4 years - 2001 to 2004

  5. BHU (Banaras Hindu University) - 5 years - 2000 to 2004

  6. PGI - 7 years - 10 papers - 1998 to 2004

  7. Jaipur - 6 years - 1999 to 2004

  8. UPDM - 3 years - 2000,2001, 2003

  9. CMC Vellore - 4 years - 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004

  10. Jayadeva - 2002

  11. Miscellaneous - 777 Questions

Highlights

A wide range of question paper and solving them will give an confidence that you can face any question in Cardiology. The Miscellaneous section that tries to cover the areas not well represented in the papers as well as the recent topics adds to this book's attraction
