Hi Lisa,
I told Judy that I could make the6 PM meeting, but I just rememebred that I have a Dr's appointemtn i the city at 6:45, so I would not be able to be there. I coud do 5 Pm and stay for 45 minutes or so.
I can do the 4 PM..

yesterday I went ot teh police to report the fact, they told me to go back to the garden and call 911 so cops would cme and make the report while looking at het damage ( laterns). I was notable to do so yesterday, as I had to be somewhere. I plan on doing so either today or tomorrow morning.

I've gotten a couple requests about changing the meeting time for tomorrow.  Due the the criticalness of this meeting I think it's most important that it works for you all.

Please inform me of a time that would be able to draw more people--
Would 6:00pm be a better time to get folks together for the meeting?
Please let me know your group decision by late evening tonight.

If we change the time I will need someone to make up a sign for the garden gate door and post it today or early tomorrow to let other folks know--I will not be able to make up and drop off the sign before the meeting.

If anyone has any questions feel free to call my cellphone: 646-338-5822

I'm so sorry about this, but lets be proactive in making this space safe and respected.  I will do all I can to support your decisions.

All best,

Lisa

I am waiting to call 911 until I hear back from Judith. She said to talk to the cops at precinct 79 so I want to know how I go about that .
I can go there today in person.

Does anyone know about this, is it the police station on classon and dekalb?

Jeffrey,
I doubt it happened at night, because  in the morning everything was OK and then all the mess was there in the evening. I will check to see if all the doors are still open. Thanks for letting us know.

I just spoke to one of the building owners from across from the Garden.  He says he will ask his tenants who face the garden if they saw any thing?
The owner his partners and a visitor to garden who appeared as I was leaving were all surprised to learn that Target is indeed a community garden as I have suspected for some time mow it seems to me that few people in the community actually understand who & why the Garden belongs to them?
With all due respect to your suggestion that we reduce the open hours and in
A way restrict community access I truly believe we should first try the opposite approach and come up with ways to make the garden feel more open to the community and make sure the message that the garden belongs to all in our community is clear as I believe this will foster more of a community wide nurturing and protective attitude for such a great shared community amenity.

All,

Any thoughts / comments feedback on these suggestions?

Still in VA.  I am so upset to hear about the Garden.  We definitely need to inform the police with any facts about timing etc.  Our block association has a connection with the community officer at the 79th and they want to know about vandalism.  We may have to reduce the hours that the Garden can be open.  I understand that by law as a community garden we need be open 20 hours per week.  We are currently open on average 63 plus hours per week.  Perhaps we need to rethink our open hours to satisfy just 20 hours per week and of course those of you who are gardening and have keys can go in whenever you need to.  This is especially distressing because it speaks to a general erosion of community respect.  I will e-mail John Hugee who is the president of our block association and get them involved.  As I said we do have a connection with the 79th precinct and they should know.

I will be back in NY on Thursday and will follow up.  In the meantime, perhaps if any of you who are around can maybe police the Garden a little bit.

I don't understand who would do this!  Someone should have seen something.  It must have taken place during daylight!  Anyway, we will fight back!!!

More later,

Hi Lisa and everyone,
I called the police to make the report. They came out, but told me that I cannot do the report as I am not in charge of the garden. They said that whoever is in responsible for the garden (NYRP, I assume?) should make the police report. They said that there is no time limit. They said that the person making the report should be at the garden, call 911 and they will come out and assess the damage (broken lanterns in this case). Maybe this could be done tomorrow as Lisa would be there for a couple of hours. Today it took the police less then 20 minutes to show up, so that was not bad at all.

I hope this helps. I will do my best to stop by tomorrow at 5PM. In the event that I cannot make it for some reason I will let you know in advance.

6:00pm-7:00pm garden meeting

Please join us to  discuss garden involvement and solutions for recent garden vandalism.

I may swing by the garden today to see what's going on.  I will be there around 3:00, so if you want to chat please join me.  For those who can not make tomorrow's 6:00 time-Silvia, and others?-- I will be at the garden at 5:00 to make sure we are getting as many voices as possible in future plans for the space.

Thanks again for following up on this Silvia. I will coordinate with Lisa to get a police report filed.

Wanted to let everyone know that the water is turned back on in the garden. The irrigation system still needs to be fixed but water can be currently be had by turning the spigot.

I am working with the new homeowner to get the rainwater collection back up and running as well.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
