Hello all-

We had a great little meeting in the garden on Wednesday, took in the evening sunshine and sorted out a few garden specifics.

First on the list:

OPEN HOURS:

Judy and Peter will continue to close the garden in the evening but WHO WILL OPEN?! A volunteer please of someone who passes by the garden every morning!

GARDEN PLOTS

If you missed the meeting and would like to participate in the communal veggie gardening, you are not too late.  Jeralyn Beach has agreed to head up the gardening committee, if you’d like to join, contact her at jeraly...@gmail.com or  812-760-4890

The core group of gardeners will all share the responsibilities: planning, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, etc.

First thing that needs to be done ASAP is turning the cover crops- tools are in the shed and if you sign up to be on the gardening committee you will receive a shed key.

I will be posting a work log inside in the shed: anytime you do any work in the garden, please write down the date and what you did so everyone else can see it.

We are really excited to announce a wonderful series of workshops for urban gardeners of all skill levels.  We talked about the gardening committee attending at least the first workshop to help plan out the space but I highly recommend attending all four.

NEIGHBORHOOD GARDENING INSTITUTE WORKSHOPS

This series will cover almost everything an urban gardener needs to know, specifically addressing the issues that come with gardening in small spaces! They will all be taking place nearby at the Bedford Stuyvesant Community Garden : 94 Malcolm X Ave between Greene and Lexington

1.      April 7th 6:00pm - Garden Planning 101: Get more from your garden by planting seasonally. Succession planting is the most important tool for maximizing a garden’s yield. Come to this workshop with a rough map of your growing space and leave with a garden plan for spring, summer and fall and seeds for early season crops.

2.        May 5th 6:00pm - Vertical Gardening Workshop: Learn techniques to increase your planting space by growing vertically! We’ll demonstrate how to build simple and beautiful trellises for beans, peas, cucumbers and other vining vegetables. Take home materials to build a trellis in your own garden.

3.        June 2nd 6:00pm Maximize YOUR Harvest: Learn how to care for your garden through the summer and fall. We’ll identify weeds and pests, learn the best ways to use organic fertilizers for higher yield crops and discuss how you can extend your growing season into the fall and winter. Take home organic fertilizer.

4.        August 4th 6:00pm - Tree Care for your Garden and Street:  Learn how to provide basic care for the trees in your garden and neighborhood in this interactive workshop. Take home a free tree care kit including a hose or bucket, trowel, weeder, cultivator and gloves.

You can sign up for all four for $30 or $10 each (for materials) and it is a certificate program if you do attend all four.  Please let me know if you plan on attending!

SIGNS!

-          I will be making a new (and more in your face) sign : NO DRINKING, DRUGS, or DOGS!

-          A sign indicating the garden plots are cared for by community members, letting people know if they’d like to get involved to contact Jeralyn

-          A sign for the communal herb pots a little later in the season, once the herbs are actually growing (with a recipe!? Eileen- if you’d like to send me a recipe, I’d be happy to laminate it, I think that is a very cute idea)

-          Work log for gardeners in the shed

POT PAINTING WITH JUDY

-          Judy will be leading a craft workshop in decorating clay planting pots on the last Saturday in April, April 24th at 2pm in the afternoon.

-          You’ll take home a beautifully painted pot with some sort of herb or flower inside!

It’s going to be a wonderful year everyone. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to contact me!

Looking forward to seeing anyone who has RSVP’d for the Gardeners Gathering tomorrow! If you haven’t registered but are planning on attending (it’ll be worth it!) please let me know TODAY!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Rachael

Rachel, sorry I couldn't make it to the gardener's gathering yesterday after all.  I did however meet up with Pedro and his wife and we turned over the beds.  We also put a few turnip seeds in the ground, just to get started for the year! Hope the gardener's gathering was a success and I guess I will just get seeds from you another time if possible? Thanks!
