Im currently working in a complex project with different architecture studios and we are trying a new working method. We receive their Sketchup's files and we link them in a Revit model and render with Enscape. We used to do it all in sketchup but we need now to jump into Revit and model the buildings at the same time. We want to have de Sketchups as linked files because we receive constant updates from the architects and that's a easy way to update them.

The problem is that in Enscape, the materials of the sketchup files are lost or they dont look nice any more. If the open them directly in sketchup + enscape the materials are correct. So the question is: how can I conserve the materials of a linked sketchup model in Revit while rendering in Enscape?

From Revit, look at the Object Categories of your linked SketchUp file. The Object Categories have associated material categories. The material categories should to be mapped with an appropriate materials. A bit time consuming but once you do it you won't have to do it again as long as layer names / material associations remain consistent.

Our latest Helix 2.6.0 release converts SketchUp materials to Revit materials including textures. The mapped objects also behave as links: when syncing Revit content generated from SketchUp, only the updated SketchUp content will update in Revit, keeping unmodified content in Revit alone.

Hello, I imported a Sketchup file in Revit by first exploding it in Revit > export to 3D Cad > putting all on same layer en exploding > import in Revit. When I want to make a section through this model and my building, the section of the sketchup model appears very weird....

So my question is how can I make proper sections in Revit with the sketchup model in the background?

In the image you can see that the brown lines are the sketchup model, my building is partly selected (blue). I actually made a section through my building, but sketchups model stays in front of it....

+

I see lines, yellow, which are not visible in sketchup because I erased them with shift+erase. Why do I see them in revit?

Different software will translate the object differently. In Sketchup it won't show those lines, when export to Revit or AutoCAD, those triangulation will show. If you want to hide it, you can use AutoCAD and use the EDGE command. Fastest way I find to hide those edge is to use 3dsmax and set the edge to invisible.

@ToanDN after following your advice, the sections etc are right displayed. However, now the site model is black. I can not change the color. When I try to use the paint tool or through object styles, I cant change the color in white..?

Hi all, I am sending a model from Revit to Sketchup. Given the needs of the project, in the Revit model, I have multiple instances (3) of a same Revit link.

At the time of making the stream, I only get one (1) instance of the Revit link to be sent (Not the copies of this (3)).

This issue has been raised here also. We have a customer who works with developing townhouses, which essentially is a lot of modular blocks (instances of the same links) that are put together to form the final layout.

The customer wants to be able to send the full project to RTLCA from the file that links everything together.

The ability to have repeated revit links is fundamental to my workflow. I see lots of potential for Speckle as a project data system, but standardising (and therefore duplicating) parcels of information is the name of the game

Each of these are modelled in Revit as separate rvt files, and are linked into each other to form a complete model. The aim is to create the minimum number of models and drawings, repeating standardised information wherever possible.

Ok I've been using Revit for a week now and have started to get to grips with using it but I am working on a project where I need to place canal boats within the model for rendering. I've had a look at the tutorials and still am a bit lost on how the material works when importing a sketchup model in to revit. the fact that when im in 3D mode I can see the colours on the boat but when I render it comes out grey.

I did post several times this same issue, if you import directly to revit you gonna see that kind of advertising (like in the first image attached), so what i do is i go to autocad and change the obj, but if you don't want that you can create a "Metric/Imperial Entourage Family" then import the sketchup model and like you can see in the second image, if you go to the "Object Styles > Imported Objects" you only see the 3 layers with the respective "Render materials" but if you go to the "Settings>Materials" (like in the 3 image) you see the all colors the model are used, what you can do is change those "Render ###..." to the real name you want and change the "Render Appearence" with the material you want, save the model (family) and "load into Project"....

THANKS FOR RESPONDING TO MY REQUEST MARKIE. THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I DID DURING THE COURSE OF MY EXPLORATION TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM MARKIE. I TRIED MODELLING SIMPLE BOXES LAST NYT IN SU,WENT THRU YOUR STEPS AND IT WORKED!! I TRIED THE "PLANT_SAGOPALM" DOWNLOADED FROM SU BUT UNFORTUNATELY THE MATERIALS/COLOR DOESNT CHANGE FOR ME AFTER I CHNGED THE MATERIAL CORRESPONDING TO THE LAYERS. BUT ANYWAY THANKS OR THE ENLIGHTENMENT MARKIE!! MAYBE I SHOULD TRY THE MODEL YOU USED ON YUOR SCREEN SHOTS.

I WENT THRU THE STEPS MARKIE SUGGESTED BUT STILL HAVING PROBLEM ON SU TO REVIT ISSUE. I WONDER WHY SU MODEL I PERSONALLY CREATED, SAVED AS DWG AND IMPORTED TO REVIT ,CHANGED THE COLOR/MATERIAL OF THE MODEL WORKS FOR ME. BUT WITH MODELS DOWNLOADED ON SU WEBSITE IT DOESNT. I TRIED CHANGING THE COLOR OF EACH LAYER ON A MODEL BUT ONLY1 LAYER COLOR CHANGES AND MOST OF THE TIME ALL IS GRAY WHEN RENDERED. IM USING REVIT 2010 AND 2009 AND SU PRO 6. COULD IT BE A SOFTWARE MALFUNCTION, PC PROBLEM, VIRUS ON MY PC????

Hi Guys, I have tired EVERYTHING to change materials in revit from sketch up...its so urgent and its still rendering grey. Could any of you guys change the materials of 3 scooters in Revit and email it to me??

Hello to all of the members on here. I just joined, because I have been searching the internet for information on energy modeling programs to use with Revit. I am currently an architect, but also formerly an electrical engineer with an MEP firm, and I am basically starting from the ground floor when it comes to energy modeling - at my MEP firm, the mechanical engineers did what little energy modeling we performed.

My firm designs all projects using Revit. I have been looking for the best way to take this geometry, starting in the SD phase, and run energy simulations. I'll mostly be using this to evaluate the effectiveness of building envelope components and orientation, though I also intend to carry the energy model through the design process so that I can verify actual building usage against my model after construction.

I've looked into a number of programs, starting with Revit's integrated software, Insight. Although I may be doing something wrong, Insight seems to be very conceptual - simply slider bars indicating potential savings from changing the entire building average R-value, for instance. I'm looking for something where I can break down energy use room by room, and see where shading can be most effective, or other targeted solutions. I have downloaded EQuest, but it seems to only accept imported 2d CAD geometry, not 3d. Trane Trace looks pretty powerful, but I don't really have thousands of dollars to spend. The other program that I have tried is Open Studio, which seems promising. However, it does not accept gbxml files from Revit as well as it does files generated directly in sketchup. In the project that I am starting on, I have dozens of surfaces generated in rooms that should be fairly simple.

Does anybody have any thoughts on the best program/workflow? I know it's an open ended question, but any advice would be appreciated. Also, if you know of any good training materials, or online college classes, for the best program, or for energy modeling in general, it would be very helpful. I've asked a couple former colleagues and current MEP consultants, but they are mostly using Trace energy modeling for the bare minimum required on occasional LEED projects, and didn't have much in the way of guidance. I'm very interested in sustainability, and in design verification, but I don't really know where to start.

While it is convenient to not have to remake inputs and geometry for the design process, often the questions are very different. In early design you want simple, even single-zone models to do lots of quick parametric studies. Later design is for loads, LEED, compliance. Use the appropriate detail for the question/goal.

I work at an architecture firm doing exactly the kind of energy modeling work you're describing (from early conceptual studies all the way to mechanical systems implementation in design development).

For my energy modeling, I use Honeybee from Ladybug: Honeybee uses OpenStudio for energy modeling, Radiance for daylighting/glare, and numerous bespoke python scripts for additional thermal comfort, environmental analysis (i.e EPW visualization, urban heat island modeling), and even CFD simulation (via OpenFOAM). In my opinion it's ecosystem of analysis is unmatched (disclosure, I am biased, as I contribute to the code). Also it has a good forum that will debug, and answer any questions quickly:

In the meantime, I have a custom workflow where I use Revit to generate a simple, bare bones OpenStudio model of thermal zones/spaces from Revit area plans, and then I open the OpenStudio model in Honeybee, and do all additional BEM modeling in Grasshopper with Honeybee. Unfortunately this is based on a Revit plugin we're developing at my company that isn't ready to be released. However, I believe this kind of workflow can be reproduced using the gbXML export tools in Revit and gbXML import tools in Honeybee.
